Has 3D printing changed the CRAFT of designer toys… or are we just romanticizing pouring resin? 👀

This debate comes up a lot in the designer toy world, and I’m curious where everyone stands.

Traditionally, we sculpt a master by hand or digitally, 3D print the master, make a silicone mold, then cast duplicates in resin. Mixing, pouring, pressure casting, demolding, cleanup, failed casts, deteriorating molds… there’s a learned craft to doing it well.

But now we can skip the mold entirely.

3D print the sculpt. Print 20. Paint them. Sell them. Need more? Print 20 more.

Some artists argue that a poured resin edition represents more craftsmanship and usually results in a more substantial, less brittle piece than a typical resin 3D print.

But then there’s the OTHER argument:

Is pouring resin actually art… or is it production?

Let’s say YOU designed and sculpted the original piece. You make the mold, pour your casts, demold and clean them up.

But that’s it.

No hand painting. No unique finishes. No creative changes between pieces. You’re reproducing your original sculpture in different color resin.

Are those individual pours another act of creating art?

Or was the ART the original design and sculpt, while everything after the mold just crafting and lazy production?

And here’s where it gets interesting:

If mold making, casting and cleanup are considered craftsmanship because they require knowledge and skill, why wouldn’t mastering supports, orientation, exposure, curing, sanding and finishing a 3D print ALSO be craftsmanship?

For me, 3D printing is an incredible tool. Resin casting is an incredible craft. Neither automatically makes something art.

The ART is what you bring to the piece.

But designer toys were built on artists sculpting, molding, casting and hand-finishing small editions themselves.

Have we lost something when the mold disappears and we can just hit PRINT again?

Or are we old-school toy makers romanticizing the process? 😂

I want to hear from BOTH sides.

👇 3D PRINTED EDITION or RESIN CAST EDITION?

As an artist, which do you prefer, and WHY?
As a collector, which do you prefer?

🚨 WHATNOT EXCLUSIVE DROP! 🚨

The studio received a fresh shipment of paint cans…

I looked away for five minutes.

That was all Knav needed.

He busted open every can, dove headfirst into the paint, and somehow managed to use his tiny little hands to paint his own face onto the lid before I caught him.

Now I’m left with the aftermath…

🎨 Introducing the unreleased Micro Knav: Paint Can Disaster Series!

These are slightly larger than previous Micro Knavs and have never been released before.

Only 31 total were created!

🎨 Meet Painty Bear. 🐻👑🤡

Painty Bear heard there was a custom show, grabbed the nearest paintbrush, and decided he was finally going to become an artist…

The only problem? He’s not exactly good at painting.

Halfway through transforming himself into my Creative Clown, he stepped in every puddle of paint on the floor, mixed up half the colors, and somehow ended up with paint on places that weren’t even touching the canvas. 🎨👣

Still, he refused to quit.

He carefully painted on the clown’s signature teeth, found a tiny crown, threw on the colorful outfit, and proudly declared, “Nailed it.”

Did he? …Close enough. 😂

Introducing Painty Bear 🐻 my 1/1 custom Gravy Bear for the Trampt Marketplace Custom Gravy Show! I had an absolute blast giving Gravy Bear the Creative Clown treatment while letting his own goofy personality shine through.

If you’d like to give Painty Bear a new home, he’ll be auctioned live alongside amazing one-of-a-kind customs from an incredible lineup of artists.

📅 Friday, July 10
⏰ 6 PM PST
🎙 Hosted by
📍 Live on Whatnot
💰 100% of the proceeds go directly to the artists!

Huge thanks to for putting together such a fun event. Set a reminder, bookmark the stream, and come hang out—you never know which Gravy Bear will steal your heart.

There are rumors about Knav.

Some say he can jump through TV screens.

Others swear they’ve spotted him hiding in the background of movies, photos, and places he shouldn’t be.

Now he’s been seen in the Backrooms.

If you ever find yourself trapped wandering endless yellow hallways, don’t worry. Knav may look terrifying, but he’s actually there to protect you.

At least… that’s what he wants you to believe.

👀 Zoom in. Did you notice the second one watching from the hallway?

Small iOS update 1.2 approved. Android is next.

One of the things I really wanted this app to do was continue promoting the artists who helped build this community through Series 1, 2, and 3.

Let’s be honest. Instagram constantly changes, algorithms shift, and artists get pushed further and further into the background. Once a release is over, most projects move on to the next thing. I didn’t want that.

Being selected for The Creatives Trading Card Project is a reflection of the work, creativity, and dedication you’ve put into your craft. Whether you’ve been grinding daily or building your art career over years, that deserves to keep being seen.

I don’t get paid to do this.

I’m doing it because I’m an artist too, and I know how important promotion and visibility are. If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that when one creative grows, it helps all of us grow.

So with this update, you can now press and hold on a Creatives card inside the app and you’ll find a new option that lets you jump directly to that artist’s profile.

My hope is simple:

Discover artists you may have missed.
Follow creators whose work inspires you.
Support them directly.
Maybe even hunt down their cards in the wild and connect with others in the collective.

This is only the beginning. I’ll keep looking for clever ways to help collectors discover artists and help artists get discovered.

For everyone who has been part of this project, thank you for trusting me with your work.

And now… after teaching myself way more programming than I ever expected to learn, I think it’s finally time to get a little rest and spend some time making my own designer toys and artwork again 😂

Please take a moment to explore the artists in the app and give them a follow if their work speaks to you.

That’s what this project has always been about: creatives supporting creatives.

Turns out “The People’s Artist” was really just “The People With The Most Paid Votes.” 👀

Artists out here fighting algorithms, burnout, self doubt, rising costs, and somehow the solution became…

“Give us more money and maybe you’ll win.” 💀

This is exactly why I built The Creatives.

No pay-to-win.
No buying popularity.
No turning artists into engagement farms for a corporation.

Just real artists.
Real collectors.
Real community.

Imagine that… an art project actually designed to help artists instead of monetizing their desperation.

Crazy concept, I know.

The art world keeps packaging exploitation as “opportunity.”

Artists are finally starting to notice.

Every series of The Creatives has proven that when artists are genuinely supported, something bigger happens.

Communities form.
Collectors connect directly with artists.
Collaborations happen naturally.
Artists get discovered.
Friendships are built.
Collectors become part of the culture instead of just spectators.

The energy becomes real.

Not because someone bought votes.

Because people actually cared about the art.

Build community, not cash grabs.

Looks like the v1.0 Android version of The Creatives app might actually land first 👀

I’m currently still waiting on a license approval from Apple, but the Android version is completed and testing great so far.

This app was built to be a true companion for collectors and creatives alike. Track your collection, signed cards, progress, extras, missing cards, utilities, and more. We finally have a really solid foundation to build from.

Apple users, I promise I didn’t forget about you 😅 As soon as the license clears, I’ll be submitting the iOS version immediately.

We build our own lanes when nobody opens the door for us. The Creatives keeps moving forward.
