🇺🇸 The Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in many American schools on October 12, 1892. It was part of the Columbus Day celebrations or the 400th anniversary of his arrival in America.

The original Pledge of Allegiance wording was: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible With Liberty and Justice for all."

Inktober Day 11 brings us this interesting stamp set for the word "rescue."

These stamps were issued by Great Britain in 2008 and they have a special secret hiding in plain sight. If you look closely, you might notice something odd about the perforations. What's up with the unusual frequency on the top and bottom of each stamp?

It mimics the Morse Code needed to send the letters "SOS" – three short dots, three long dashes, and three short dots. What a neat idea!

On October 10, 1846, astronomer William Lasell discovered Neptune's moon Triton. It is the largest of the planet's moons and moves in an orbit of the opposite direction to Neptune – the only moon in the Solar System known to do this. Triton is the seventh-largest moon in the Solar System.

Time for Inktober day 10, and we're showing off something "Mystical."

But wait, how are minerals "mystical?" Well, in addition to being beautiful, some people believe minerals or crystals have mystical properties. For example, amethyst is said to be good for protection, mental clarity, and spiritual awakening. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is said to provide grounding and clear negative energy. Meanwhile, petrified wood represents transformation and rhodochrosite is known as the "soulmate stone."

It's Inktober Day 9, and today we've chosen these Hong Kong stamps for "ram." All four were issued in 2003 to celebrate the Year of the Ram (sometimes referred to as the sheep or goat) in the Chinese New Year.

In 2003, the Year of the Ram was paired with the element water. It ran from February 1, 2003 to January 21, 2004. People born in the Year of the Ram are said to be mild-mannered, responsible, considerate, artistic, compassionate, and shy.

The next Year of the Ram actually begins very soon! It kicks off on February 6, 2027, and will be celebrated by a Lantern Festival that lasts over two weeks (16 days total)!

On October 9, 1635, Roger Williams was banished rom the Massachusetts Bay Colony for spreading "new and dangerous opinions" about religion. He had argued (among other things) that the authorities had no right to punish people for different religious beliefs AND no right to take Native American land as their own.

After leaving Massachusetts, Williams worked with the local Native Americans to settle near Narragansett Bay. He announced that anyone could come to the new colony and enjoy religious freedom, and named his new settlement "Providence."

Inktober Day 8's prompt is "stinky!"

This postage stamp is from the 1999 Insects and Spiders sheet and pictures one of the world's stinkiest animals – the bombardier beetle.

These insects have a defense mechanism so stinky that it puts skunks to shame. When threatened, they spray a chemical created through the combination of hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide stored in its abdomen. When these chemicals react, they produce heat, which means the product ends up nearly boiling when it's sprayed. This vaporizes some of the substance, increasing the "smell factor" even more.

Luckily, the bombardier beetle's noxious spray is only harmful to other insects. In fact, they're carnivorous and feed on other insects, so this spray is also a hunting technique.

You never know what you'll learn when you start investigating stamp subjects!

The original announcement of the new department states: "The mission of the Office will be to develop and coordinate the implementation of a comprehensive national strategy to secure the United States from terrorist threats or attacks. The Office will coordinate the executive branch's efforts to detect, prepare for, prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks within the United States."

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa established the Missionaries of Charity. Today, this organization includes over 5,750 members (religious sisters) who agree to uphold vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and "to give wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor."
