SAVE OUR SANITY **AUCTION PREVIEW TODAY (SATURDAY): **If you show up, it makes Jo and Todd happy and keeps them from being alone in the auction house.

Buying sight-unseen is a high-stakes sport, and since everything is sold strictly as-is, where-is, coming to inspect the goods in person is just plain smart business. SPECIAL LISTING: reserved forever! If you have been to our sales, our auction barn, or pretty much anywhere we are, you know we cherish our family. And you have probably seen these two around our sales. Even though they both have full-time careers, they have found it in their hearts to help us out from time to time! Our eldest son, Jase, proposed to his girlfriend, MK, and she said YES!!! We are elated!! So next time you see them around, give them a big CONGRATS!

**CAMPING ITEMS ALERT** JO OPINION AHEAD: Fall is a great time to camp (if that is your thing). I, personally, only camp in an RV-and not much of that anymore, but to each their own. **Another "Jo Story" about things - but this one's a keeper**: I love costume jewelry. The chunkier and the more of it, the better. Maybe I got that from my mom, or maybe it was from watching a beloved family friend, Betse, decked out in all of her splendid faux jewels. In either case, I found myself wearing a particular locket yesterday to church. I have included photos for reference. On the back is engraved "Rebecca Prall". This locket came to me in my mother's possessions. Normally, a locket like this, if unengraved, might be something that gets lost in the shuffle or sent to be sold or donated. However, with a NAME on the back. Now that is something, isn't it? Because there is a name on the back, I can tell you it belonged to my grandmother's sister. And because of a quick look at my family tree on Ancestry.com (yes, I have a subscription to that and research my family history...that shouldn't surprise you), I can tell you WHEN she lived, WHERE she lived, and a little bit about her. Why do I have this locket? Probably because she was never married and had no children. Mom mom was 2 years old when Rebecca passed away, so there wouldn't have been much of a relationship there.

But the bottom line is, this locket is a connection with my heritage, my family - a family member that is meant to be remembered. What makes this locket special is that engraving. That ability to trace it and research it. That is why it has been kept. I never met Rebecca Prall, but I pay my respects to her when I wear this.

Engraved jewelry is a great way of record-keeping that has been around for many years. Documents rot, paper burns and decays, digital records can be wiped..... but metal.... that's a thing, isn't it? So there is something to think about. Maybe get a couple of things engraved. It doesn't have to be fancy jewelry. Just make it something you love. Someone will appreciate it and maybe take a second to look you up a century after you walked this earth.

I know I talk about getting rid of things, but I am certainly glad my people saved this and passed it to me.

**STUFF COMES AND GOES, BUT LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS CAN OUTLAST IT ALL** Today was not a glamorous day. Today we helped a family put an end to the cleanout of a loved one's home. They had done the hard work of sifting through and boxing items over the past weeks since their loved one's passing. We were merely there to pick up the rest to bring back and liquidate. However, when we got it back to the barn and I saw that pile of stuff we unloaded sitting there, a heavy weight came over me.

We see thousands of items pass through our auction and estate sales. Some amazing, some normal, and some pretty unusable. All of these things are the physical things left of someone's life.

At the end of the day, houses get sorted, and items find new homes, but it is the memories we make and the people we make them with that are the most important. These are the things that endure.

Today and every day, hold your loved ones close, because the relationships we build are some of our greatest treasures.

Your loved ones don't necessarily want what's in your junk drawer, your storage unit, or that cabinet over your fridge. They want YOU.

Sorry to be so serious today...I have included a couple of pics of me relishing moments with a couple of favorites as well as a pic of today's pile of boxes so you will have a visual contrast to match this post.

Now I am off to spend quality time with some of my loves....you should, too.

*IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON...GIVE ME EXCESS OF IT* - Twelfth Night. Many of you know that I spent 29 years teaching high school theatre here in my hometown. It was a glorious run. In fact, this is a photo of when I was just a pup...the last day of my first year of teaching in 1995 with a cedar nameplate my dad had made for me. Teaching theatre is what caused me to love vintage things. I had to spend a great deal of time in flea markets, antique stores, etc., finding props for the school plays I was directing over the years. What you might find surprising is that I started my career HATING Shakespeare, much to the chagrin of one of my beloved college professors at Drury. Having only been introduced to the tragedies in most of my coursework, I didn't share any love with the BARD. Then one day I caught the movie "Much Ado About Nothing" on TV. I LOVED it. I couldn't believe it was Shakespeare. The next year we produced it at the high school. After that, we did Shakespeare regularly throughout my career. These books take me back to a career that seems further in my rearview mirror than it actually is. I retired from teaching in 2023. It was always going to be the year. It was the year of my "rule of 80" in MO public school retirement and the year our youngest graduated. I have no regrets. Most are surprised when I say I don't miss it. Yes, I miss the students and my colleagues, but I LOVE what we do now. I love what we have built here at N.E.S. I love our customers and clients. I love hearing their stories. I love this auction barn, even when it's hot or when it's cold. THIS is where it's at for me now.

Thanks to our clients and customers and this community that raised me and continues to support me and my family.

So I leave you with a fond farewell as I bound out to the barn for another day of lotting and listing an auction!
