๐Ÿ” A Difficult Farm Update ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿ’”

We unfortunately have some sad news to share with our Maynard Family Farm family.

Due to some major changes happening across the road from our farm, hundreds of acres have recently been cleared. That sudden loss of habitat has pushed a significant amount of wildlife and predator activity onto and around our 40 acres.

Between the increased pressure from coyotes and hawks, we have suffered devastating losses to our flock and are now down to only a few birds. Because of this, we will unfortunately be unable to continue fulfilling egg orders for the remainder of the season.

Our plan is to spend the coming months rebuilding our flock, strengthening our predator protection, and making changes to keep our future birds as safe as possible. We hope to have fresh farm eggs available again in the spring. ๐Ÿฃ๐ŸŒฑ

We are incredibly disappointed, and we know many of you look forward to your eggs each week. We truly appreciate everyone who has supported our little farm and continues to grow alongside us through both the good seasons and the hard ones.

This is a setback, but it certainly isnโ€™t the end. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ” What's in Our Chicken Feed? We Believe Quality Feed Creates Quality Eggs. ๐Ÿฅš
At Maynard Family Farm, we don't just buy one bag of feed and call it a day.
We create our own custom feed blend by combining several premium feeds to give our flock a more balanced diet with the protein, vitamins, minerals, and whole grains they need to thrive.
Our custom mix includes: ๐ŸŒพ Nutrena NatureWise Hearty Hen Layer Pellets ๐ŸŒพ Nutrena NatureWise Harvest Blend ๐Ÿ’ช Purina Layena+ High Protein Layer Feed ๐Ÿชถ Nutrena NatureWise Feather Fixer (20% Protein)
This combination provides our hens with: ๐Ÿฅš Excellent nutrition for consistent egg production ๐Ÿ’ช Higher protein to support muscle health and feather growth ๐ŸŒฝ A variety of grains and textures that encourage natural feeding behaviors โค๏ธ Balanced vitamins and minerals to keep our flock healthy year-round
In addition to their custom feed blend, our hens always have access to: ๐Ÿฆช Free-choice oyster shell for extra calcium when they need it, helping produce strong eggshells. ๐Ÿงฑ Purina Flock Block for enrichment, allowing them to peck, scratch, and stay active while enjoying supplemental nutrition.
And of course, our chickens spend their days outside scratching for bugs, grazing on plants, dust bathing, and enjoying fresh air and sunshine.
We believe healthier, happier chickens produce better eggs and that's exactly what we strive to provide for every family that supports our farm.
โค๏ธ From our flock to your table, thank you for supporting Maynard Family Farm.

๐ŸŒฟ Growing More Than Food ๐ŸŒฟ
One of the projects we're especially excited about is transforming the hillside behind our greenhouse into a beautiful planting of native North Carolina perennials and pollinator plants.
This slope has been vulnerable to erosion, so instead of relying on mowing or temporary solutions, we're planting species that naturally belong here. As they establish, their deep root systems will help stabilize the soil, reduce runoff, and create habitat for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial wildlife.
It's a project that takes patienceโ€”these little plants may not look like much today, but in a year or two this hillside will be bursting with color and life while protecting the land for years to come.
Every step we take on the farm is about building something sustainable. Healthy soil, healthy ecosystems, and a farm that works with nature instead of against it.
We can't wait to share the transformation with all of you as these plants grow! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฆ‹

๐ŸŒž Heat + Eggs = Fragile Yolks? ๐Ÿฅš
Even with these hot North Carolina days, our girls are still keeping us busyโ€”2 full dozen today! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ”
One thing we've noticed (and you might too!) is that egg yolks tend to break more easily during extreme heat. That's because when hens get heat-stressed, they often eat less and put more energy into staying cool. The result can be eggs with more delicate yolk membranes.
The good news? It doesn't mean the eggs are bad. They're still just as fresh and deliciousโ€”it just means you'll want to crack them a little more gently.
We're doing everything we can to help our flock beat the heat: ๐Ÿ’ง Fresh, cool water all day ๐ŸŒณ Plenty of shade ๐Ÿ‰ Hydrating treats ๐ŸŒ… Feeding during the cooler parts of the day
These girls are still rewarding us with beautiful farm-fresh eggs every day, and we couldn't be more thankful. โค๏ธ
How has this heat been affecting your flock? We'd love to hear your experiences! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅš๐ŸŒฟ

We officially have power on the farm! โšก๐Ÿšœ

Our new 400-amp electrical service is installed, inspected, and energized. This is one of those behind-the-scenes projects that may not look exciting, but it's a major step toward everything we've been working toward.

With power now in place, we're one step closer to expanding the farm with the greenhouse, irrigation systems, workshops, cold storage, and all the other projects we've been planning.

It's amazing to look back and see how far this property has come from raw land to drainage improvements, orchards, blueberries, chickens, and now full electrical service. Every project brings us a little closer to our vision.

Thank you to everyone who's followed along and supported us through this journey. We can't wait to show you what's coming next!

A Farm Rescue We Didn't Know We Needed
When we built our greenhouse, we quickly realized we had a major problem. Every heavy rain seemed to bring more erosion, washing away soil and threatening the work we'd put into creating this growing space.
We reached out to DOW Dirt Works, and what started as a drainage project turned into a complete farm rescue.
They didn't just move dirtโ€”they took the time to understand the water flow across the property, created a detailed plan, installed extensive drainage solutions, reshaped the area, and transformed what was becoming a serious issue into a system built to last.
The before and after photos speak for themselves. What was once eroding sand and runoff is now a properly graded, functional area that protects our greenhouse and improves access throughout the farm.
One thing that really stood out was the digital mock-up they provided before work even started. Being able to visualize the finished project gave us confidence that the solution would workโ€”and they delivered exactly what they promised.
If you're dealing with drainage issues, erosion, grading, driveways, or land improvement projects, we can't recommend DOW Dirt Works enough.
Thank you for helping protect Maynard Family Farm and setting us up for long-term success.

๐Ÿฃ Brooder Update! ๐Ÿฃ

The nursery is getting busy at Maynard Family Farm!

After giving a few eggs a helping hand and finishing the hatch in the incubator, we've officially welcomed a new batch of chicks. Watching them explore their new brooder, find the water, and pile into their little chick huddles never gets old.

These little ones are the next generation of our flock and a reminder that farm life is full of surprises. From first-time mothers to incubator rescues, every hatch has its own story.

For now, they're staying warm, eating well, and growing fast. Before long they'll be out exploring the farm alongside the rest of the flock.

๐ŸŒฑ Growing the flock one peep at a time.

๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿซ Big things are taking root at Maynard Family Farm! ๐Ÿซ๐ŸŒณ

This week we've been busy expanding our orchard and berry patch, planting for the future one tree at a time.

Our newest additions include:
๐ŸŽ Honeycrisp, GoldRush, Crimson Crisp, and Enterprise apples
๐Ÿ‘ Elberta peach
๐Ÿ Bartlett and Moonglow pears
๐Ÿ’ North Star cherries
๐ŸŸฃ Bruce and Methley plums

And our blueberry patch keeps growing too! We've added a great mix of varieties including Pink Icing, Sunshine Blue, Climax, Brightwell, Powderblue, and Premier to help extend our harvest season and improve pollination.

Fruit trees are a lesson in patience. They won't produce overnight, but every hole dug and every tree planted is an investment in the future of our farm.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our dream. We're excited to watch this little farm grow, one season at a time. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿšœ

A little chicken update from the new farm! ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒฑ

The hens that made the move have settled in so well that they've decided I no longer need to know where the eggs are. They're hiding them all over the property, and I'm pretty sure they're winning this game. ๐Ÿซ

When we moved everyone, we left 7 hens behind to do what chickens do best and hatch out some babies naturally. We've got a few first-time moms, and unfortunately they chose violence instead of motherhood, and we lost two chicks.

We were able to step in and rescue two little ones that had just started hatching, and they'll be getting the VIP treatment in the brooder while they grow up.

To give the rest the best chance possible, we also pulled 22 eggs and moved them into the incubator to finish out their hatch.

Farming definitely keeps you humble. Some days you're collecting eggs, some days you're playing detective, and other days you're suddenly running a neonatal chick unit. But we wouldn't have it any other way.

Stay tunedโ€”we should have a whole new generation of Maynard Family Farm chicks joining us soon! ๐Ÿฃโค๏ธ
