Last week we went to Down East Mariculture Supply to pick up 100,000 oyster seed from their nursery. We get our seed at 6mm and grow them on our farms until they are ready to be harvested.
We start all of our babies in SEAPA baby baskets with 3mm holes to ensure they don’t fall through. Since the holes on the baby baskets are so small, we take extra care during the initial stages to keep the baskets clean and scrub off any mud that may have accumulated from week to week. We always want to make sure the basket holes aren’t getting clogged so the waters can flow freely and our babies are able to feed and grow during their most vulnerable stages.
Oysters need adequate space to move around so they can tumble and feed and get a nice round shape. As they grow and get bigger, we grade and split them into separate baskets. We transfer them to 6mm baskets, and eventually to 12mm baskets for their final grow out until we harvest them for market.
While oysters grow at all different rates, we expect to harvest some of our fastest growers from this batch as early as this winter, and as late as next spring. It generally takes between 6-10 months to grow our oysters from the time we get them, but it depends on so many different factors.
Oysters grow fast this time of year, when the waters are warmer and there’s more food in the water for them to feed. They generally hibernate through the cooler months and growth slows down drastically. It’s a balancing act to account for all of these different factors!
Continue to follow us as we show you more aspects of our farm every week.
