Check the germination rate of your old garden seeds. Place 20 seeds between moistened paper towels and put in a plastic bag. Place the bag in a warm location such as the top of the refrigerator and check after 5-7 days to see how many seeds have germinated. Seeds with less than 75% germination should be discarded and new ones purchased to prepare for spring gardening.

Try forcing some forsythia branches this winter. Select mature branches which are usually thicker and have more flower buds. Bring indoors and place in a sturdy vase filled with water. These bare brown branches will turn into something beautiful. The whole act of connecting with nature in this way reaffirms its beauty and mystery.
