Waste. To waste away, to be wasted, to produce waste, all connotations of the concept of waste are negative. Look at all this waste in my boxed lunch, that was given to 100s of people today! Let's walk through this: 1. The sandwich was wrapped in paper AND plastic. 2. Pouches of condiments were provided. I didn't use either, and noticed most didn't. 3. I was given plastic silverwear in a plastic bag. Yet I was given a sandwich that was precut. ๐ถ But I had to open the bag to retrieve my napkin ๐ 3. I brought a refilable water bottle. 4. ***THE APPLE WASNT WRAPPED!**** Whhhhy? Because we think of fruit as something you wash before you eat it. AND Mother Nature gave apples a "wrapper" (skin).
So what are we dealing with here? Just straight up common sense? I mean, if I don't go and wash my apple and just eat it with the assumption it was washed for me....why does my wrap need to be double wrapped?? Shouldn't I be able to assume the same clean hands were used to make the wrap as put the apple in the box???
As a designer, waste should be the enemy. Good ideas in waste management for product, environmental, packaging and marketing design need to be the focus to keep no-common sense crap like this from happening.
