Composed in the fall of 1880 by Russian composer Tchaikovsky, the 1812 Overture in E♭ major is performed at 4th of July celebrations through the US .

Of course, this majestic work was not composed for our firework celebrations -- it was commissioned for the opening concert of the All-Russian Arts and Industrial Exhibition and commemorates Russia's successful defense against the French invasion in 1812.

So how did this piece become such central component of our Independence day celebrations? In 1974, Arthur Fiedler, the maestro of the Boston Pops, conducted a program for the 4th of July. This program was televised and included the 1812 Overture. Musical directors across the country watched the program then adopted it for their bicentennial concerts.

Truly, music truly transcends time and place.

This unusual Steinway grand is in our Greenville, SC gallery. What a beauty! The striking wood is Padauk - which is part of Steinway's exotic wood collection.

Padauk is found primarily in Central & tropical west Africa. Its vivid and striking orange red coloring and open grain make for a uniquely beautiful piano unlike any other.

Our Greensboro model B is being loaded on a truck to head to Guilford College for the Eastern Festival of Music! Our movers make it look easy, but this grand is 7 feet long and 802 pounds. The model B is outsized by the model D (not pictured) which is a 9 foot grand weighing 1064 pounds (which was also moved onto the Dana stage by our movers!).

Our Boston baby grand has quite a view! Wow! It is part of the ICCI (International Choral Composers Institute) in Charlotte, NC! The ICCI is an immersive program that nurtures & instructs choral composers and lyricists of all levels while connecting them with real-world editors and publishers. It is a 5 day program located at Springhill Suites in Center City Charlotte,NC, The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte, and the Cain Center for the Performing Arts in Cornelius, NC .

Eastern Festival of Music starts TODAY! This Greensboro musical treasure combines great classical music-making with a summer educational program enriched with incredible faculty and young artists on the campus of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Distinguished artists will be teaching students and performing to large audiences at the Dana Auditorium.
