Our vintage loving Chicagoan of the week is Robert Parise/ IG: ! Robert grew up in Brooklyn but feels Chicago has “kept its unique character in a way that much of NYC has not”. Chicago allows you to “visually time-travel anywhere from the 1890s to the 1960s if you squint”, what a great way to think of our city! Robert enjoys learning about several historical eras, everything from the Golden Age of Piracy through the 1960s. “I have re-enacted late Victorian civilian and often bring elements of Victorian dress into my daily outfits…[but] my main hobby is reenacting the Second World War with my main impression being an American rifleman in the 401st Glider Infantry Regiment….I’m branching into WWI and possibly the Napoleonic wars as well!” says Robert. He does a variety of impressions, including USMC aviation, Army Air Force, and USN as well as Civilian impressions and impressions of post-war returning GIs. By day you can find him managing and consulting at Jos. A. Bank, but his heart is also in theatre. “Chicago’s storefront theatre scene is unrivaled in scrappy creativity and mutual support.” Robert is a founding member of “American Maniacs Unlimited, a Chicago-based stage combat and sketch comedy theatre company that is maybe best described as if Monty Python and Mel Brooks had a baby and that baby was raised by the Animaniacs and taught to sword fight by Inigo Montoya.” American Maniacs Unlimited can be found at Fringe Fest in D.C. this summer (dates tbd) which is their first show outside of Illinois! They will be performing “The Spiro Agnew Memorial Variety Hour and Fish Fry (Now With Real Fish)”.

Today we are featuring the important work of Preservation Chicago: an organization, founded in 2001, who draws attention to and builds advocacy for saving Chicago’s architecture and history. Prior to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 it was quite easy to demolish buildings that were seen as no longer serving the city or to make way for new development. Thankfully there are a few more hoops to jump through for that to happen now, but saving these marvels still requires the public’s voice (that’s you!). Checkout their website preservationchicago.org for more information on their list of 7 Endangered Buildings for 2020, ways to get involved (as simple as signing an online petition), and dates for their bus tours, workshops, and lectures. Swipe for photos of their 2020 Endangered List: James R. Thompson Center / State of Illinois Building, Roseland Michigan Avenue Commercial District, Chicago Union Station Power House, Jackson Park, Central Manufacturing District, Pershing Road, Chicago Town & Tennis Club / Unity Church, Midway Plaisance and the South Shore Cultural Center, Washington Park National Bank.

“I came to Chicago on a road trip with friends back in 2003 and immediately loved it. My friends went back to Minnesota and I decided to stay. I have lived here ever since.” Meet Miss Tammi Savoy, our resident vintage vocalist queen. You can find her singing doo-wop, R&B, rock n roll, and essentially any other genre from the 1940’s-1960s. She has been singing full time for 2 years now. She performs lead and backing vocals with The Lovettes singing midcentury girl group standards, with Tammi Savoy & The CC Combo where she “highlights artists that helped create the sounds of Rock & Roll yet did not receive the recognition that they deserve”, and occasionally with Bobby Wilson (son of the legendary Jackie Wilson). “I love keeping that music alive”. You can also find her in several magazines modeling in the pinup style and as an extra in a few Chicago-filmed shows. Today, Tammi wears about 90% vintage, she loves the “craftsmanship, details and quality of vintage clothing” and how beautiful she feels when she wears it. But it wasn’t always this way, when she was younger she ”didn't have access to true vintage so [she] would create [her] own looks” that were inspired by the 60s and 70s. “While everyone was wearing hip-huggers and bootcut jeans, I was wearing bell bottoms and peasant tops. I would also make my own bell bottoms with flared jeans by hand sewing fabric onto the bottom”. But as she grew older she became more inspired by Old Hollywood films, and you can clearly see it in her looks today! “I have always been drawn to several bygone eras, but my favorite is the '50s” says Tammi. And her love of bygone eras is a huge reason why she loves Chicago too! “There's something magical about the skyline and there is always something to do…There is also so much history and beautiful architecture here. My hubby was born and raised here and has no plans to ever leave.” We hope you stay for a long time too Tammi!
You can follow Tammi here on Instagram, Facebook, or through her website www.misstammisavoy.com where she posts events and information on upcoming live performances.
