This is a debut I couldn’t put down!

Diamond is struggling to find herself in a town designed to make her feel unwelcome. Since her father’s disappearance, she’s the only Black resident. Her mother…well, it’s complicated. Diamond’s weight is a struggle (at least to the other teens). And, her weirdness is a badge she tries to wear courageously. 

How does this all come together? You’ll have to read it yourself but, just so you know, this is a coming of age story destined to be a classic. Secrets and lies, hurt and hope, resilience, recognition, some terribly complicated history and even a bit of humor.

This is definitely one to discuss.

I take this gem of a debut as one of my recommended

Of course you can read it for the deep dive into the philosophy of decision making OR you can simply enjoy the absurdity of husbands emerging from the attic. Whatever your choice, you’ll get a main character that will make you roll your eyes SO HARD or give her a great big hug for just being human.

Bonus: You’ll also laugh (most likely out loud). 🙌🏽 So, maybe not for silent reading night tonight! 🤣
