SPOTTED EAGLE’S CAMP, circa Nov. 1880. The L.A. Huffman photo showed Chief Spotted Eagle's camp at the Tongue River near Fort Keogh, adjacent to Miles City, Montana. Spotted Eagle was a fierce warrior who had commanded about 180 Itazipsho (Sioux) warriors at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Sioux had roamed the plains to hunt buffalo for meat, skins for their tents, and hides for blankets. The Sioux were not an agricultural tribe and historically had no concept of private ownership of land.

The 1,700+ Sioux were allowed considerable freedom of movement and association at Fort Keogh, until forcibly relocated via five steamboats to Standing Rock Reservation in Dakota Territory in June 1881. Brenda Schad: A Trailblazing Native American Model and Actress

Brenda Schad is a celebrated model, actress, and philanthropist of Choctaw and Cherokee descent. Born to Native American parents, she has proudly embraced her Indigenous heritage throughout her life and career. From a young age, Schad was aware of her adoption and even knew the identity of her biological mother, which gave her a strong sense of self and roots.

Her journey into modeling began at the tender age of 14 while she was trying on a swimsuit in a store in Japan. Spotted by a talent scout, this serendipitous moment launched what would become an illustrious international career. Schad quickly rose to prominence in the fashion world during the 1990s, gracing the covers of prestigious magazines such as *Cosmopolitan UK*, *Vogue*, *ELLE*, and *GQ UK*. Her striking features and graceful presence made her a standout in campaigns for top designers and luxury brands.

Beyond the runway, Schad ventured into acting, appearing in films including *Awake* (2007), *Head Over Heels* (2001), and the 1999 TV movie *D.R.E.A.M. Team*. Her multifaceted talents also extend to philanthropy. Deeply committed to her community, this remarkable woman founded the Native American Children's Fund in Oklahoma, an organization dedicated to supporting and enriching the lives of Native American youth.

A new generation has taken leadership in Samson Cree Nation.

24-year-old Izaiah Swampy-Omeasoo has been elected Chief, marking a generational shift in one of the largest First Nations in Canada.

Before becoming Chief, Swampy-Omeasoo had already become known to many community members through advocacy for younger voices in leadership and governance.

He also attempted to run for Chief in 2020, but was barred because he did not meet the Nation’s minimum age requirement for candidates.

The Nation’s change in leadership also arrives after years of community conversations around transparency, accountability, healing, and trust within Samson Cree Nation.

Since the results were announced, many community members online have described the shift towards their young leadership as hopeful — rallying around change and renewal.

Following the election, Swampy-Omeasoo wrote:
“Let the healing begin my people.”
