For two weeks, the retail chain is accepting car seats in any condition — including infant seats, car seat bases and booster seats — in exchange for 20% off the purchase of new piece of baby gear. The car seats will be accepted even if they are expired or damaged.
Once a car seat expires, usually after 7 to 10 years, it isn't safe to use anymore. Even if you've never been in an accident, changing temperatures create wear and tear on child seats, which can eventually make them unsafe. You can check your car seat's expiration by checking the manufacturing label.
When disposing of a child seat, it’s recommended to do so "in a way that it won’t be reused by anyone." Target says materials from the car seats dropped off during the trade-in event will be recycled to make things like plastic buckets, carpet padding, construction materials and storage bins.
Those who turn in their car seats during Target's trade-in event will receive their discounts in the form of a 20% off Target Circle bonus that can be used on two purchases. Eligible purchases include a new car seat, stroller, high chair, play yard, swing, rocker, and more types of baby gear. You'll need to download the Target app to take advantage.
The car seat trade-in runs from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3.
Since starting its car seat trade-in program in 2016, Target says it has recycled materials from more than 3.5 million car seats.
