Does Your PPE Conform To The Latest Standard?
What concrete contractors need to watch for about personal safety equipment standards.
Most concrete contractors already have PPE on the job. Hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, and first aid kits aren’t new to anyone in this industry.
The question isn’t whether crews have safety gear. The better question is: Does that gear conform to the most current performance standard? That’s where things can get confusing.

Why “Compliant” Is Not Always Clear
PPE performance standards are updated over time, about every five years. Standards change because of equipment innovation, testing improvements, and advancements in understanding how injuries happen and how to prevent them.
But OSHA doesn’t always update its regulations right away. So you can end up with two different things being true at the same time: A product may meet an older standard still referenced in OSHA regs, and another product may meet a newer standard that better reflects current testing and jobsite conditions.
Both may be “compliant,” but they may not offer the same level of information, testing, or protection.
That’s why contractors should ask one more question: Does my PPE conform to the latest standard?

Jacobs JV wins contract on $750M Utah water project

The builder will team with Bowen Collins & Associates to transform a 110-year-old canal into a pressurized system.

The Central Utah Water Conservancy District tapped a JV of Dallas-based Jacobs and Draper, Utah-based Bowen Collins & Associates to provide engineering services for the proposed Strawberry High Line Improvement project, a critical water infrastructure program in the state.

The future project, which carries an estimated $750 million construction value and is still awaiting final approval, would update the Strawberry High Line Canal via new pipelines and related infrastructure, such as a new pump station, according to the Aug. 11 news release.

Installing a CONFAST® Concrete Screw? Follow these steps for a secure and reliable installation:

1. Drill the Hole

Drill a 5/32" hole into the concrete using a carbide-tipped bit that meets ANSI Standards B212.15.

2. Drill to the Proper Depth

Drill the hole 1/2" deeper than the anchor will pe*****te the concrete, ensuring the minimum embedment of 1" is met.

3. Drill Through the Fixture (If Needed)

The hole can be drilled while the fixture is in place. The minimum fixture hole size for the 3/16" x 1-1/4" Hex Head CONFAST® Concrete Screw is 1/4".

4. Clean the Hole

Remove dust and debris using a wire brush, vacuum, compressed air, or blow-out bulb.

5. Insert the Screw

Insert the point of the screw into the hole. Make sure it pe*****tes the base material at least 1" but no deeper than 1-3/4".

6. Drive the Anchor

Using a 1/4" nut driver hex driver, turn the screw clockwise, applying slight pressure until the head is snug against the material being fastened.

Safety Reminder

Always use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) according to manufacturer and OSHA guidelines.
