Today we listed the Who. It’s always bittersweet when I hear The Who because of the horrific events that took place at The Who concert in Cincinnati. On December 3, 1979, 11 people were killed, and dozens of others injured at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati when concertgoers were trampled while attempting to enter the arena. Apparently the band members were on stage warming up and people outside waiting thought that they were starting the show. Only a limited number of doors leading inside the building were opened, prompting a stampede to gain entry. The Who, as well as coliseum officials, promoters, and the city were all sued and found liable for the mishap. This ultimately lead to the ban of “Festival Seating” in Cincinnati, which is still in effect to this day. The Who hasn’t played Cincinnati since.

It was awesome to get back to listening to records today. Billy Joel has released 13 studio albums in his career and out of those 13 albums, he’s managed to wrack up 33 Top 40 hits. His first hit, Piano Man, was actually written about his time as a piano player in an L.A. lounge. Billy Joel was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

Today was a trip to the early to mid 80s. We listed Men at Work, Phil Collins, Genesis, and Huey Lewis and the News. The key to distinguishing a Phil Collins song from a Genesis song is keyboard and brass instruments. Genesis with have an emphasis on a keyboard sound and some distinct drums while Phil Collins solo work will be heavier on drums and often contain some brass instruments. Phil Collins and Genesis were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Neither of the other 2 groups have been inducted as of 2023.

Finally back to listing vinyl records. The Guess Who, not to be confused with The Who (which was sort of their intention), was formed in 1965 in Winnipeg, Canada. Founding member Randy Bachman, who was a devout Mormon, left the group in 1970, at the absolute height of their success. He went on to form another popular 70s band called Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Randy’s son Tal had a pop hit in 2000 with the song “She’s So High”. The Guess Who have a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame but they have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Earth Wind & Fire got their name from drummer and founding member Maurice White’s astrological sign. White’s sign is Sagittarius, which has the primary elemental quality of Fire and the seasonal qualities of Earth and Air. “Earth, Air & Fire” didn’t sound right, so “Air” became “Wind”. Earth Wind & Fire was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

Towards the end of last month, the annual Farm-Aid concert took place in Indiana. The purpose of Farm-Aid is to help provide help to struggling farmers here in the US. In 1985, during the Live-Aid concert, Bob Dylan was performing a set on stage with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. During the set, while addressing the crowd, Dylan suggested that it would be great if there would be a Live-Aid type event for US farmers… and Farm-Aid was born. Going back to last month’s Farm-Aid, 20 bands had already performed, 12 hours of music done, and the last act was leaving the stage the stage went black. As the stage lights slowly brightened, Bob Dylan was standing at the mic with The Heartbreakers backing him. Dylan did 3 songs and left the stage, never addressing the crowd. Bob Dylan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Bee Gees were formed in the late 1950s and their name “Bee Gees” is actually short for Brothers Gibb. Three brothers Maurice, Barry, and Robin made up the group. Unfortunately, Barry is the sole surviving brother. Along with recording 20 studio albums in their career, they also wrote songs for other artists. One of those song was Islands In The Stream recorded by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. The Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The Hall’s citation says, “Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks, and Paul McCartney have outsold The Bee Gees”

I’m grateful that I get to listen to music all day as my job. I’m grateful that people choose to buy from us. We’d love if everybody bought everything we list but that’s not going to stop us from making fun of some of the items that we sell. This is a Beach Boys 2 record album called High Water but instead of going into a studio and recording 2 records, the just took 2 albums that they already had for sale… retitled the set and put them in this jacket. They didn’t even bother to create new stickers, as you can see from the picture hahaha. To make things worse, one of the records is stereo, the other one is mono… and to top that off, they did make a stereo recording for the Good Vibrations album, just chose not to use that one. This is so silly…PS Please buy it
