Fact bit: What was the first state to claim a “state rock”? The Golden State, California. Apparently, CA contains more serpentine than any other state in our nation. Though the State of California Capital Museum reports that many Californians mistake gold as their state rock… However, as we know, gold is a mineral, not a rock. Although there is a difference between a state rock and a state mineral, many states have both.

Here is one of several specimens with garnet that I collected from North Carolina! These are gemmy Garnets in their host rock! So beautiful, and great collectors. Could also make for some beautiful cabs.

In short, GEODES have a cavity, or cavities, many times containing crystals, and sometimes other minerals.
NODULES can look like a geode (not always), but they are solid (no cavities), compact crystaltal formations often filled with agate, chalcedony, or jasper.
AGATE is a specific type of chalcedony notably a microcrystalline type of quartz often characterized by its banded or layered look inside! The colors vary and each one is unique.
AGATE, like Savannah river agate, is a slightly different kind of agate. More like a Chert (yet a different term), which some people use to Knap with to make arrowheads and such.
Then there is the agate like the kind I found in Tampa Bay, Florida (I.e the fossilized coral I found with agate in it.).

Agate isn’t just one thing. It’s important to be specific with the information like I did with those pictures and mentioning what it was and where it came from.
Personally , except the Tampa Bay agate, I love to make jewelry with agate, some is for collecting (in my opinion), but some is for sharing as well.

Though I love Geology in general, and Rockhounding all kinds of things, i do have a soft spot for agates.

Agates are absolutely beautiful, and I am thoroughly fascinated by them!!! Thought I would share are a page with you as sometimes people get a little confused between Geodes and nodules and agates.
