🪨 How an agate forms
An agate can take thousands to millions of years to form, depending on the rock and conditions.
Think of it like nature slowly filling a tiny rock cavity with layers of stone.
1. A hole forms in volcanic rock.
Long ago, gas bubbles got trapped in cooling lava, leaving a hollow space.
2. Mineral-rich water gets inside.
Water carrying tiny amounts of silica and other minerals slowly seeps into the cavity.
3. Minerals begin to harden.
The silica starts turning into microscopic crystals, usually chalcedony.
4. Layer after layer forms.
Every time more mineral-rich water enters, another extremely thin layer can be deposited. Different minerals and conditions create different colors and patterns.
5. The cavity eventually fills.
After countless cycles of filling and hardening, you have an agate.
⏳ So, how long?
There's no single exact number. Some agates may form over hundreds of thousands of years, while others can take millions of years. The process is incredibly slow—often depositing microscopic layers at a time.
And that's one of the coolest things about an agate:
those beautiful bands are essentially a geological history book, recording layer after layer of what happened inside that rock over an enormous amount of time. 🥰🪨
