Gold plated King alto from around 1926-1927. The customer paid next to nothing - garage sale/flea market kinda thing. When he brought it to me he had no idea it was gold-plated, as it was SEVERELY tarnished. (As usual, I wish I had some "before" pictures). Many frozenxrods, broken springs, etc. Anyway, here it is. It plays amazingly in tune for a saxophone that old. Feels like a King - nice, firm, solid, positive feeling action. Once again, I wish it was mine.

This job was a doozy and it turned out great, so I wanted to share it. I wish it was my horn.

Although it looks like the customer bent it over his knee in frustration (who hasn't wanted to do that with their soprano?), that's not the story. The real story is not mine to tell, however.

I ended up buying a one piece mandrel from Boehm. That pretty much did all the heavy lifting - metal memory is a cool thing! The side F # tone hole needed some work, but most of the other tone holes were in great shape. It took some (a lot of) patience realigning the posts, straightening the keys and rods tubes- making everything nice and crisp!

But when it was done I couldn't put it down.

Happy New Year everyone. I'd just like to take a brief moment to thank everyone for the continued growth and success of Matt's Woodwind Shop. I met some wonderful people, some amazing musicians, and some very loving parents! (you know who you are!).
It's been a steady, ever-widening stream of work since I opened. I love my job 98% of the time. So thank you, Thank You THANK YOU to everyone for trusting me to help your instrument sing like it should. Here's to 2024!!
