I have loved straight pull actions for years. Sadly, the action is not very common in the United States, so the options to get your hands on a good one are often limited. My main pest-control r***e took a dive and is currently waiting on parts…which was all the excuse I needed to build this. The r***e is utilizing a Voquartsen Summit action, which is a side lever, blueprinted version of a R***r 10/22. I expected this to be a quick and dirty job that I could slap together in an afternoon with off-the-shelf parts, but as it happens, the chassis from Midwest Industries had multiple compatibility issues with the receiver, which required modification of both the receiver and the chassis. The result is a unique r***e that you can’t find anywhere else. Once I pro-tuned the 10/22 magazines for better feeding, the r***e was shooting .6 MOA with CCI stingers. What would you change about this r***e?

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a world of difference. One such little thing is ambidextrous controls on an AR. Specifically the bolt catch, which allows you to split the work of reloading and locking back the bolt between your strong and weak side hands. Being able to do this without having to move your strong hand from its firing position is a time and hassle saver (if you ever need to clear a gun while prone, you’ll know why).

I need to remind myself to use my weak side for my optic switch though. Always room for improvement.

These days, many gun manufacturers think that creating a woman’s r***e simply means shortening the length of pull (or rebranding a youth model), painting it pink, and marking up the price. This is not a good approach for getting a woman shooter set up with serious hunting and defense tools. For a gun stock to perform well, it needs to naturally align the shooter’s eye with the fi***rm’s sights, encouraging good form for steady handling and recoil control. On average, women have a shorter length of pull (LOP) than men, as well as different shoulder, cheekbone, and neck dimensions. A woman’s higher cheekbones means that their fi***rm needs to have a higher comb in relation to their gun sights. The additional neck length and more aggressive shoulder slope translates into needing more drop at the toe of the stock to encourage natural head placement. Unfortunately, I see a lot of women kinking their necks hard to get down to their optics. Finally, to compensate for shorter arm length, adjusting the LOP is only half of the equation – you need to balance out the weight of the barrel as well. Ounce for ounce, the barrel exerts the most leverage on the shooter, and removing a few inches off the overall length - or using a lighter weight carbon-wrapped barrel - can make a world of difference for shooter endurance.

There is quite a bit more to this discussion, and I plan on going into further detail about how we manage all of these elements in a cohesive system. More videos to come, so stick around.

This Blue Ridge R***e 6.8 Western was custom-built for a petite woman shooter and has been made with top-of-the-line components throughout.

The platform is designed around the Terminus Zeus action, which has been custom inletted into a PSL155 stock from H-S Precision. This stock gives the ability to truly fine tune the fit to this particular shooter (side note: there is so much more to r***e-fit than just the LOP). The 18-inch long barrel creates a nice balance between maneuverability in brush and muzzle velocity. The muzzle brake - along with the weight of the r***e (which hits at around 8-9 lbs.) - helps tone down the recoil for this hard-hitting cartridge. A crisp 2.5-lb, 2-stage trigger, paired with a Schmidt and Bender PM2 Ultra Short 3-20 scope, will help the shooter extract the most accuracy possible from this awesome platform.

It is a delight to shoot, and can handle any big game animal in North America at any practical hunting distance. The MDT HNT26 chassis can accommodate a range of LOP sizes and keeps this whole system light enough to carry all day while providing a rock solid platform for the Terminus Zeus action. The brake on the Preferred Barrel works to keep muzzle rise and recoil to a minimum for this hard-hitting magnum.
