October 8 is National Hero Day! Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear uniforms. Some stand at the front of a classroom. Some care for patients, raise families, volunteer in their communities or simply show up when someone needs them most.

National Hero Day honors the real-life heroes who inspire us through their courage, kindness, compassion and willingness to put others before themselves. A hero might be a firefighter rushing toward danger, a police officer protecting a community, a member of our military serving our country, or a healthcare worker caring for someone on their hardest day. But heroes can also be much closer to home.

They can be parents and grandparents who sacrifice for their families, teachers who believe in a struggling student, coaches and mentors who encourage young people, neighbors who lend a helping hand, volunteers who give their time or friends who refuse to leave our side when life gets difficult.

Sometimes the greatest heroes are the people who never think of themselves as heroic at all. They simply see something that needs to be done and they do it.

Today is a wonderful opportunity to tell those people thank you. Send a message, make a phone call, buy them a cup of coffee or simply tell them how much their example has meant to you. And remember, we can all choose to be a hero in someone's life. A kind word, a helping hand, a little encouragement or simply taking the time to listen can make a bigger difference than we realize.

Who is a real-life hero in your life, and what makes that person your hero? Give them a shout-out in the comments so we can celebrate them, too!

It’s National Pumpkin Seed Day! Before you toss those seeds after carving your fall pumpkins, you might want to save them! Those little seeds hiding inside are not only delicious—they’re packed with nutrients, too.

Pumpkin seeds have been enjoyed for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of their use dating back to ancient Mexico. Today, we know just how much goodness can be packed into such a tiny seed.

Pumpkin seeds are a source of:

💚 Plant-based protein
💚 Magnesium
💚 Zinc
💚 Iron
💚 Phosphorus
💚 Healthy fats

And there are so many ways to enjoy them!

Roast them straight from the pumpkin
Season them sweet, salty or spicy
Sprinkle pepitas over salads
Add them to oatmeal or yogurt
Mix them into breads and baked goods
Add them to granola or trail mix
Even use them to make pesto!

And for our fellow chicken keepers…plain, unsalted pumpkin seeds can also be an occasional treat for your flock. Just remember that treats are best given in moderation alongside their regular balanced feed.

National Pumpkin Seed Day was founded by SuperSeedz Gourmet Pumpkin Seeds, a woman-founded company started by Kathie Pelliccio, who began roasting pumpkin seeds in a cast-iron pan in her own kitchen.

So when pumpkin-carving time arrives this fall, don't throw away those seeds, roast them!

What’s your favorite way to season roasted pumpkin seeds: salty, sweet, spicy, or something else? Share your favorite flavor, or your recipe, in the comments!

My families' favorite brand of sunflower seeds is Chinook Seedery. They come in so many awesome flavors and one of the board members at the nonprofit I work at is an owner.

Here are some of Dolly Parton’s recipes you might enjoy in her memory. I found these on Pinterest and thought I would share! I particularly like her recipe for the Cup-a, cup-a, Cup-a, Cake!
