Every household has a hierarchy. In our house, the apex predator is Leo. Leo is a nine-pound orange tabby cat with a missing piece of his left ear and a heart made of pure ice.

My 165-pound Great Dane decided a long time ago that Leo is a ruthless dictator who must be obeyed at all costs.

Yesterday evening, Moose was parading around the living room with his prized possession. It is a massive, slobber-coated orange rubber ball. He loves it more than he loves breathing.

I was reading on the couch. Father was asleep in his recliner, so naturally, Father was no help. I had allowed indoor ball time right after dinner. I should have known better.

Moose opened his giant jowls to pant, and the wet ball slipped out. It bounced twice on the hardwood floor and rolled across the rug.

It came to a complete stop perfectly between the two front paws of Leo, who was lounging like a tiny Sphinx by the fireplace.

Phase 1: The Hostage Crisis
Moose froze. All four of his giant paws rooted to the floor.

Leo did not move. He just slowly blinked his yellow eyes and stared at the towering beast in front of him.

Moose looked at me as though I had betrayed him. I had not thrown the ball, but in his mind, I had allowed gravity to commit a terrible crime.

Apparently, this was now an emergency.

Moose took a cautious step forward. He lowered his massive head until his loose jowls pooled on the floor, and he let out a pathetic, high-pitched squeak.

"Mother. The tiny tiger has claimed my sphere. Call the authorities."

Leo slowly placed one single paw directly on top of the orange ball.

Moose gasped. He physically sucked in air and took a step back. Moose took this personally. The ball was his rightful property, but he was absolutely not going to risk his life to take it back by force.

Phase 2: The Barter System
Moose decided diplomacy was his only option. He turned around, trotted into the hallway, and returned with a disgusting, half-chewed rope toy.

He gently dropped it three feet away from Leo.

Leo stared at the rope. Then, he stared at Moose. Leo was utterly unimpressed.

Moose panicked. The offering was clearly not worthy. He scrambled into the bedroom, his nails clicking frantically on the floorboards. He came back carrying one of Father's expensive leather slippers. He placed it delicately next to the rope.

Leo let out a low, vibrating purr. Because of the room's acoustics, it sounded like a small chainsaw.

"He demands more, Mother! The beast cannot be reasoned with!"

Phase 3: The Submission
Having run out of items to trade, Moose resorted to manual labor. He needed to prove his complete obedience to the feline overlord.

He backed up, locked his back knees, and dropped his front half onto the floor, sticking his towering rear end straight up into the air. He began to shuffle forward on his elbows.

It was a 165-pound dog doing a military crawl of absolute submission.

Leo watched this giant, spotted creature humiliate himself. When Moose was exactly one foot away, Leo finally lifted his paw off the ball.

Moose stopped breathing. The transaction was complete. His hard work had paid off.

The Climax: The Betrayal
Moose reached his giant snout forward to gently reclaim his prize.

At the exact same second, Leo flicked his wrist.

Smack.

The ball shot across the slick hardwood floor. It rolled swiftly under the television console, hit the back wall, and stopped in the darkest, most unreachable corner of the room.

Leo stood up, stretched his back legs, and strutted into the kitchen with his tail held high in victory.

The Aftermath
Moose was completely shattered. He pressed his giant face against the bottom of the TV console, whining dramatically into the darkness.

He looked back at the kitchen doorway, utterly terrified.

"Mother. The orange demon used dark magic. The ball is banished to the shadow realm. We are no longer safe here."

I had to get off the couch, grab a broom, and fish the slobbery ball out from under the heavy furniture.

Moose was overjoyed to have his property returned, but he is currently keeping a ten-foot distance from the cat at all times.

I am constantly cleaning drool off my baseboards. Leo is currently sleeping on top of the refrigerator.

But Moose is proudly patrolling the living room, firmly believing that he negotiated with a warlord, survived a hostage crisis, and lived to tell the tale.

I am currently staring at a shiny welcome postcard from the Elmwood Veterinary Clinic. It says they cannot wait to meet our sweet boy.

They have no idea what they are asking for.

This is a brand new clinic for us. We are switching practices because of the catastrophic events that unfolded at our previous veterinarian.

Let me paint you a picture of the trauma. During our last visit, the veterinary technician asked Moose to step onto the standard stainless steel floor scale.

My 165-pound Great Dane decided the metal rectangle was a trapdoor leading directly to the center of the earth.

He bravely tapped it with one giant paw. The digital screen emitted a tiny electronic beep.

Moose took this personally.

He scrambled backward. His dinner plate sized paws completely lost traction on the slippery linoleum. His long legs pinwheeled in every direction. He slid across the waiting room and crashed directly into a towering cardboard display of joint supplements. Plastic bottles rained down on him.

He then tried to camouflage himself by hiding behind a small potted fern in the corner of the lobby. It did not work. He is the size of a dairy cow. The fronds barely covered his left ear.

Moose looked at me as though I had betrayed him. He spent the remainder of the exam sitting entirely on my lap, crushing my oxygen supply, and refusing to make eye contact with the doctor.

To ensure we do not get banned from this new clinic, I decided we needed to do a desensitization practice run in our own living room.

I should have known better.

Father volunteered to play the role of the new doctor. He walked into the living room wearing a white bath towel draped over his shoulders to simulate a medical coat. He was holding a plastic kitchen meat thermometer and a premium dog treat.

Father was no help. He immediately broke character, giggled, and told Moose he was a "good, brave patient."

Moose did not feel brave. He stared at the white towel. He smelled the plastic meat thermometer. He recognized the medical energy.

Phase 1: The Retreat
Moose slowly backed away. He tucked his tail so far between his legs it tapped his own stomach.

He retreated into the dining room and tried to compress his massive frame underneath the wooden table. A Great Dane hiding under a standard dining table looks like a horse parked in a compact car space. His broad black spine lifted the heavy oak tabletop two inches off the rug.

He froze. He hoped we could not see him.

Phase 2: The Turtle Shell
Father approached the dining room. "Come here, buddy. Let Doctor Dad check your heart."

Apparently, this was now an emergency.

Moose panicked and army-crawled backward. Because his spine was wedged securely against the wood, the entire dining table traveled with him.

Wood scraped aggressively against the tile floor. Screeeech.

Moose stood up to escape faster. The table stayed resting perfectly on his back. He was now wearing it like a rigid, six-seater turtle shell.

Phase 3: The Armored Tank
Moose began to trot. The dining table moved swiftly through the room.

He bumped into the kitchen island. Thud. He corrected his steering and navigated toward the hallway. He was a 165-pound armored tank, seeking refuge in the guest bedroom.

"Moose, drop the furniture!" I pleaded.

He ignored me. He galloped forward. He wedged himself, and our heavy oak table, firmly into the narrow hallway bottleneck. The wooden legs scraped loudly against the drywall.

He stopped. He could not go forward. He refused to go backward. He let out a deep, muffled groan from underneath his wooden armor.

"Mother, I have fortified my position. The fake doctor cannot reach my vitals now."

The Aftermath
We had to completely dismantle the table legs with a hex wrench to free him from the hallway.

Moose is currently pouting on the sofa. He is aggressively side-eying the kitchen meat thermometer we left on the counter, certain it is plotting against him.

Our actual appointment is approaching fast.

I am packing a large bag of high value cheese and writing a preemptive apology letter to Dr. Henderson. I just hope they do not own any potted ferns.
