Up online & a damn enjoyable time, Bernadette Mayer & Anne Waldman's The Basketball Article. One of the few intersections between the world of poetry & professional sports, Mayer & Waldman attempted to write a basketball article for Oui Magazine - & not only were they denied press access by the New York Knicks, their article (so-called) was rejected for being both unusual & "experimental." The result is expectedly poetic, digressive, oddly transportive but also, emphatically fu**in funny, featuring observations of this nature:

"We begin to dress in red, white and blue, we do not stand up for the national anthem. We always sit next to the opposing team. We distract them. We enter their consciousness."

"All teams should meet in the center of the world and stay there for the 80-game season."

"Basketball was not invented in 1891 by Dr. James A. Naismith of Springfield, Massachusetts. A form of it was played by the Aztecs who had an advanced civilization before the great white god of Cortez arrived in 1519."

Printed in a limited, hand-stapled edition by Angel Hair after its formal rejection, this is the Shark Books reprint from 2005, limited to an edition of 500.
