"If anything can save the world, I’d put my money on beauty. The great manifestation in the world in all its forms, from the stars, to the vast night sky, to the oceans, to all the elements that we see and perceive. That is an awesome phenomenon that goes beyond description and words. If there's something that we want to call god, that's far greater than ourselves, I would say it was nature."

"Last Light at Calico" 24x24 Oil
"Last Light at Calico" 5x5 Gouache

From the gouache study, I was able to work out the overall impact of the large shadow on the mountain. This shape was what first drew me to stop on the side of the road to take photos as the sun was going down near the ghost town of Calico. When I was moving into the larger oil piece, I tried to maintain the impact of the shadow on the overall composition, while developing or paring back certain parts of the mountain. I then added a bit of foreground interest, based on a few other photos I took in the area. The gouache is a more accurate representation of what I saw, so it was a useful tool to get that out of my system and move on to a more invented landscape inspired by the feeling I had while in the location.

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
-Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Earth Colors Two

The West, in general,
and New Mexico, in particular,
is the natural home of
the earth colors,
the Siennas,
the Umbers, and the Oxides,
like a trio of
ruling families,
proud of their lineage,
where the Sienna cousins have married
into the Umbers,
Oxide uncles have tarried with
Sienna nieces,
and attractive, older great-aunts
from the
many-branched
Umbers
have had the
pick of the lot.

This piece, by Dave Santillanes, titled: "Edge of Paradise" 40x54 Oil he states, "My smaller study is a plein air painting done on location along the Slate River looking west towards Paradise Divide. Studying from life allows me not only to develop a more realistic rendering of light and atmosphere but it’s where the “story” develops. During those 2 hours things happen in the scene that may not have revealed themselves in mere passing. Maybe it’s changes in the weather or maybe it’s something more obvious like a cowboy moving cattle through the scene."

Without atmosphere, painting is nothing.
-Rembrandt
