My local physical, physical-media shop. I wish I was closer but I've been to some events here over the years. Great community vibe there and programming. Not just a shop. Happy Father Day to all you fathers.

The Church Arcade was conceived in April 2025, but didn’t officially enter this world until January 30, 2026 (9 months development wasn’t intentional but feels fitting in retrospect). While it’s not the same as a child, we’ve spent a lot of time and energy to grow it to where it is and we are proud fathers of this humble arcade we have built together.

This sells on ebay for around $200. So how did I get it on ebay last week for $3. I shouldn't be telling you this! Its all about the search terms.

Morality Tip: It is not your fault that a seller doesnt know what they have!

This rarity was a hit from a search alert I set up. It targets VHS sellers who do not know what they have. How can you do that?

By adding "-VHS" to any search, you will only find sellers who didn't know to put VHS in the title.

It sounds counterintuitive at first. So what DO you search for if you're specifically excluding "VHS"? Well... everything else. People who dont know enough to list it as a VHS usually list them as "VCR Tapes" "Video cassette" "videotape", etc... Thats where the gold is, even on ebay.

Another adjacent tip is misspelling. Sellers with rare tapes that know it's rare but aren't getting any hits, will lower their price eventually. They will take a lowball offer if its been up for a while. For these sellers, I do feel badish... but a search for "VJS" or "VHR" or "VCH" all hit gold once in a while..

My friends and I growing up, movies were like the main event when we'd hang. We could rack up three in a day, no problem. It's why analog generations like movies so much, it was our way of seeing the world before the internet existed. Movies were defining our culture in very specific ways. ...We didn't really have a vision of what "skate culture" was until movies like "Gleaming the Cube" came out.

Think of how weird the analog generations were, compared to now. Teenagers will never again know the joy of getting together with your crew to cry it out over the double-VHS of Braveheart. Movies at that time all had an intermission which was about 2-3 Newports long.

If you grew up on MTV, pre-viacom takeover... if you grew up on music videos, you grew up on some heavyass video art. You are the last to straddle the digital and analog worlds. Your media literacy is peak! You hit the existential jackpot. You enjoy David Lynch movies with ease.
