🔪 Flexible Material Pricing for Professional Knife Makers

Have you ever wondered how to properly price the materials used in a knife build? Should the price be based on material cost, the labor required to work with it, or the premium value of a specialty item?

Knife Maker Inventory provides a flexible pricing structure that allows makers to determine exactly how each material affects the final customer price.

Each material can be assigned one of seven pricing treatments:

• Included in Base
• From Materials
• Fixed Upgrade
• Cost-Based Upgrade
• Separately Priced
• Hourly Priced
• Customer Supplied

Standard materials can remain part of the base package price, while premium steels, handle materials, components, and specialty services can be priced using a fixed upgrade, cost-based percentage, separate per-unit price, or dedicated hourly rate.

Customer supplied materials can also be identified without adding them to the material charge.

This flexibility helps makers create more accurate estimates, account for premium options and additional labor, and protect profitability on every custom order.

Here is a A quick screen recording of the custom-order workflow in the Knife Maker Inventory app.

In this example, I start with a saved Skinner template, select the blade steel and handle material from inventory, add the build details, calculate the material cost and selling price, assign the customer, and create the order with its due date and production checklist.

The goal is to keep everything connected—from the first customer request to the completed blade—without relying on scattered notes, spreadsheets, or memory.
