I was recently both honored and excited as the Two Morrows Publishing Company asked me to write an article for their September, 2026, ( #45) issue of “Comic Book Creator.” The magazine is devoted to comic book artist/creator, Gene Colan, who would have been 100 years old on September 1st.
I was asked to write about Gene’s ongoing friendship with me over the years as we took turns calling one another on the phone.
The magazine is being released this upcoming Wednesday (comic book day…August, 12th) in all of your comic shops around the country. I’m not sure if the big book stores (Barnes and Noble for example) will be carrying them, but ask your book store or comic book dealer for it. I’ve already received my advance copy and Gene takes up the whole back half of the magazine and I think it’s a great one for fans of Gene’s art.
In a comic panel talk session that I was on with one-time Marvel head, Jim Shooter a few years back, he announced that Gene was probably in the top 5 comic artists of all time, drawing Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, Captain America and Batman as well as drawing and co-creating, Guardians of the Galaxy!
Look for it, you won’t be disappointed!

This week I am starting to shop for a birthday present for my buddy, Tim. Like myself, he collects comics, so…he gave me a 3-page list of comics to choose from for a gift. As you can see if you look closely, I have already circled a few books as I scratch them off of his list. But how many comics are enough for a gift for a massive comic collector!

I just picked up the last issue (the finale, #31) of Howard the Duck, which featured Howard adopting the alter-ego of ‘Iron Duck,’ which was Howard in a same-colored garbage can as the colors of Iron Man’s armor. The oddity here is that Gene Colan drew both Iron Man for awhile and Howard for most of the series. I think it was a good send-off for the comic!

Yep, NFL training camps are opening up now and it made me think of my younger days in a certain snow game that I evaded the rusher and threw a touchdown pass!

The other day, I showed some of David Russell’s sculpture work he did for me. He did this one for me because he knew that I loved the original Captain Mar-Vell, co-created by my friend, Gene Colan. Here it is and hope you like it!

Looking forward to seeing everyone on 8/1 and Comics And Friends is always a great host!

Last week I showed the Bystander artist, David Russell, and his work that he did for me in sculpture. Today I show off his work on another statue he did for me…my version of Batman…Mr. Dusk!

This book is very interesting and gives a great example of how much J. Edgar Hoover (F.B.I. director in the late 60s) hated and kept track of the Beatles. It did not help that Elvis went to Richard Nixon and stated that The Beatles needed watching for their odd ideas and drug use. (Hey, this is not me, it’s been written up in articles and books that old ‘swivel-hips’ was worried that the English band would knock him outta the charts…they did) And Elvis is on two different pages in this tome. Plus, I just LOVE this picture!

A few years back I was doing a book signing at a toy and comic shop and ran across a few pop culture items. One of which, the one I’m showing off today, was a pop can and figurine, featuring Grape Ape, the 70s cartoon character. I thought I had lost it in my move to my new place, but recently found it…hence, I’m showing it off!
