We’re so focused on building the next big AI breakthrough that we’re not stopping to ask a basic question: what happens when water becomes the limit?

AI data centers can be massive water users. They need water for cooling, and they also have an indirect water footprint through the power plants that generate their electricity.

And here’s the problem many data centers are being built in areas already facing water stress.

Nobody can live without clean water. That’s not debatable.

So as we race to build more data centers, maybe we should have an honest conversation about how much water they will need, where they’re being built, and whether we can develop AI without putting additional pressure on communities already struggling with water.

Technological progress is important.

But so is making sure there’s enough water for people, farms, and ecosystems to survive.
