Okay, okay… I get it. The word “washable” tugs at our heartstrings as parents, pet owners, and people who actually live in their homes. But here’s something most people don’t realize: all wool rugs are washable.

And unlike many “washable” rugs made from synthetic materials that curl at the edges, wear out quickly, and eventually end up in a landfill, a quality wool rug is made to last for generations.

Most so-called washable rugs wouldn’t even fit in a washing machine anyway. A wool rug typically only needs a professional cleaning every 4–5 years, and because it has no backing, much of the dust and dirt simply falls through the weave instead of getting trapped inside. And spills? Not to worry. The natural lanolin in wool naturally wicks away moisture making them so easy to clean.

Rug washing facilities exist in most cities, and if you’re feeling ambitious, you can even scrub one yourself every few years.
