On October 1st, 2006, my mom and dad opened the doors to Captain Clay & Sons for the very first time. After decades of my dad commercial fishing and selling his catch to other markets, they decided it was time to sell their own fish out of their own market and build a business with their three sons.
I was 13 years old.
But my love for seafood started long before we ever opened those doors. I grew up going out on my dad’s boat, fishing alongside him and being around the commercial fishing industry from a young age. By the time we opened the market, seafood was already a huge part of my life.
Every day after school, I’d take the bus straight to the fish market and work the rest of the day with my mom while my dad was out commercial fishing. On Saturdays, I’d work the Delray farmers market, helping introduce our new market to the local community.
In my late teens, our mom got sick and my brother and I stepped into more of a leadership role at the market.
Over these 20 years, my passion for seafood has only grown. I’ve learned to appreciate not only the fish itself, but where it comes from, how it’s harvested, how we can support sustainable fisheries, and how much of every fish we can use instead of waste.
My mom isn’t with us anymore, but the business she and my dad started 20 years ago is still very much a family business. Today, my dad, my brothers Clay and Zack, and I own and operate Captain Clay & Sons together. I’m incredibly grateful for what my parents built, everything my mom taught me, and the fact that I still get to work alongside my family every day.
I’m also incredibly grateful for our crew, past and present, who have put so much into Captain Clay & Sons over the years. And to our customers, whether you’ve been coming through our doors since the beginning or just found us recently, thank you. You’ve trusted our family to put seafood on your table, supported us through every chapter of this business, and made these 20 years possible.
Here’s to 20 years of Captain Clay & Sons and to the next 20 years of doing what we love. 🐟
