Another question I wish more of my clients asked during relationship readings:

Because the people you allow into your energy can affect more than just your romantic and emotional life. Pay attention to what happens to your creativity, motivation, productivity, opportunities, and even your relationship with money when certain people enter your life.

I genuinely feel like a lot of people don’t understand what reciprocity actually is.

Some people look at reciprocity as a tit-for-tat exchange. If I buy you a gift, you should buy me a gift. If I pay for a date, you should pay for a date. If I do this for you, you should do this for me. But that’s not necessarily reciprocity. That’s expecting someone to replicate how YOU chose to show up.

Reciprocity can simply look like consideration. And I think we often project our own expectations onto other people and create scenarios in our minds for how they should reciprocate what we’ve given them. Then, when they don’t reciprocate in the exact way we imagined, we become disappointed and convince ourselves that they haven’t reciprocated at all.

Meanwhile, that person may have reciprocated five or six times over, just differently. You could’ve bought them a gift, while they sent you a resource because they knew it would benefit you. They could’ve encouraged you when you needed it, shown up during a difficult moment, ran a small errand for you, listened when you needed to vent, or complimented you on a day when you were feeling low. THAT is reciprocity too.

The problem is that sometimes we become so focused on how we expect people to reciprocate that we completely overlook how they’re already showing up for us within their own capacity.

Reciprocity does not always mean, “I did this, so now you do this.” Sometimes reciprocity simply means, “I considered you because you consistently consider me.”

Here are some questions that I wish more clients inquired about when it comes to relationship readings:

✨ What purpose does this person serve on my romantic or healing journey?

✨ In what ways could this person hinder or deter me from my growth and evolution?

✨ What version of myself is still attracted to this type of connection?

✨ Instead of asking, “Should I walk away or leave this person?” ask, “How should I respond energetically to this connection or to the energy that this person is presenting to me?”

Sometimes the better question isn’t about what THEY are thinking, feeling, or doing. Sometimes the better question brings the focus back to YOU.

Whatever is developing inside of them is something they never expected to feel, and it’s almost like it’s happening in a way that feels outside of their control. There’s honestly a lot changing within this connection. Take what resonates and leave what doesn’t.

As we transition into the early part of human mating season 😂, I’m noticing that there are a lot of new beginnings, new connections, and existing connections beginning to deepen. So here’s a message that I want you to keep in mind when exploring new connections or new energy within connections:

“A quiet Wednesday doesn’t erase an affectionate Saturday.”

And what I mean by that is, seasons in people’s lives can alter not only their capacity, but how they’re able to show up in a connection. If you’re dating someone who needs communication and reassurance, simply provide it. It’s much easier to communicate what something really is than to leave someone trying to fill in the blanks and the gaps themselves.

And truthfully, with some people, you may have to communicate certain things more than once. That’s okay too. But they also have a responsibility to regulate themselves and their nervous system, and learn how to adapt and flow with those changes without automatically assuming something is wrong.

Sometimes a change in someone’s availability has absolutely nothing to do with a change in how they feel about you. Their capacity may have changed. Their circumstances may have changed. Life may simply be life-ing. That’s where communication, reassurance, emotional regulation, and understanding have to meet each other in the middle.

Everything doesn’t have to mean something changed between you. Sometimes life changed around you.

This connection is developing beyond whatever expectations this person initially had. Whatever boundaries they put in place for themselves, it’s almost like those boundaries are slowly starting to lower. But there’s still control in how this person shows up and what they allow.
