Behind the Scenes - pH doesn't just affect color. It can affect solubility too.

In my last behind-the-scenes experiment, we saw how pH changed the color of a red cabbage extract. This time, I tested its effect on salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid doesn't readily dissolve in water. Increasing temperature and pH can help but there's a catch.

I made a 2% salicylic acid solution and adjusted four samples (see the photo):

pH 3 → came out of solution
pH 4 → remained dissolved
pH 5–6 → remained well dissolved

The higher pH made it easier to dissolve, but salicylic acid is most useful in its free-acid form. As pH rises, it becomes ionized, reducing the amount available for its intended exfoliating activity.

So the goal isn't simply to make an ingredient dissolve. The solution has to address the issues of solubility, stability, skin compatibility, and performance!
That's formulation: making sure the chemistry works.

Behind the Scenes

Science is everywhere, even in the color of your skincare. This is the same red cabbage extract at four different pH levels:

pH 3.3 → bright pink
pH 5.3 → lavender
pH 7.3 → purple
pH 9.1 → green

The dramatic color change comes from anthocyanins, natural plant compounds that are highly sensitive to pH. Anthocyanins also have antioxidant properties that make them interesting for skincare.

But the real lesson isn't about the colors. When the pH of a skincare formula changes, it can affect the chemistry of the natural extracts inside it - potentially affecting their color, stability, and intended performance.

Not every botanical extract will give us a dramatic visual change like red cabbage. That's why this experiment is useful: it lets us see something that may be much less obvious in other extracts.

When we formulate with natural extracts, we're working with active plant chemistry, not simply adding a pretty ingredient to a formula. We have to make sure that what we put into our skincare remains able to do what it is supposed to do.
