🌳 Do you have a black walnut tree in your yard? Don’t give up on gardening around it! 🌿

Black walnut trees are beautiful, long-lived shade trees, but they can make choosing nearby plants a little tricky. They naturally produce a chemical called juglone, which some plants are much more sensitive to than others.

The good news? 💚 There are plenty of beautiful plants that can happily grow around black walnuts!

🌸 Daylilies
🌿 Hostas & ferns
💜 Iris
🌺 Peonies
🌼 Black-eyed Susans & coneflowers
🌿 Heuchera, astilbe and more!

The secret is simply knowing what to plant—and what to avoid. Our graphic gives you a quick guide to some juglone-tolerant choices, sensitive plants, and a few tips for gardening successfully around your walnut trees.

🌱 One important tip: Don’t assume an empty spot beneath a walnut tree means nothing will grow there. Choosing the right plants can turn a difficult area into a beautiful garden!

Have a tricky spot under a black walnut? Stop in and talk plants with us! We’d be happy to help you find options that fit your light, soil, and growing conditions.

🌳🌿 Right plant. Right place. Happy garden! ❤️

🍅 WHY ARE MY TOMATOES SPLITTING?! 🍅

You’ve waited all summer for that beautiful homegrown tomato... only to walk out to the garden and find it CRACKED! 😩

Tomato splitting is incredibly common—especially this time of year—and uneven moisture is often the biggest culprit. When tomato plants go through a dry spell and then suddenly receive a heavy rain or lots of water, the fruit can swell faster than the skin can stretch. And... CRACK!

A few things can help: 💧 Keep watering as consistent as possible
🌿 Add mulch to help maintain even soil moisture
🌱 Avoid overdoing high-nitrogen fertilizer
☀️ Protect plants from extreme heat when possible
🍅 Harvest tomatoes as they begin to color—especially if heavy rain is coming!

And remember: a split tomato isn't necessarily a wasted tomato! If the crack is fresh and the fruit otherwise looks and smells good, you can often harvest it right away, trim away the damaged area, and enjoy the rest. If you see mold, leaking, insects, or signs of rot, toss it.

Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate, but a little consistency can go a long way toward happier tomatoes! ❤️🍅

Have a tomato or garden question? Stop in and see us at The Greenhouse at Fensel's—we're always happy to help you grow! 🌱

🍂🌱 Your garden doesn’t have to be done yet! 🌱🍂

August is a great time to sow another round of veggies for a second fall harvest. As the days begin to cool, many garden favorites actually thrive with less heat stress—and some even develop sweeter flavor after experiencing cooler temperatures.

🥬 Cool-weather crops to consider: kale, spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard, carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, peas and more.

⏱️ Need something quick? Radishes, baby greens, lettuce and spinach are great choices because many varieties mature quickly enough to squeeze in another harvest before the really cold weather arrives.

A few fall-garden tips: • Check the days to maturity when choosing varieties. • Keep newly planted seed beds consistently moist while they germinate. • As temperatures cool, plants will grow more slowly, so give them a little extra time. • Row covers can help extend your harvest when those first chilly nights arrive.

🌱 And don’t forget about our BULK SEEDS! You can purchase just what you need for your fall garden—whether that’s one short row of radishes or enough spinach to keep you eating fresh greens well into fall.

Stop by The Greenhouse at Fensels and get that garden growing again.
There’s still plenty of gardening season left! 🍂🥕🥬
