When you are new, the idea of pivoting can be daunting.

This information may be useful to help calm your nerves.

When to use it? GREAT Question...

Here's Bam's suggestion: Take your NMJL card, and put an * by the hands that have the most combinations.

Then while you are choosing tiles to pass in the discard, you can lean into the hands that have the most combinations. This sets you up to have lots of options for pivoting.

For example, line 3 in the Quints section has 216 combinations. JUST KEEPING HOLDING Any 2 numbers in the same suit, holding jokers, and keeping dragons, and you are well on your way to winning that hand.

FRIENDS…it seems that our Mahjong community is growing, and we couldn’t be happier . So here are 2 important questions :
1) in addition to our 3 open play opportunities each week, Do we need to offer an evening or two of open play? If so, what time and day would work better? Would you be willing to pay a nominal fee?

2) There are low stress, big fun beginner tournaments but they are at least an hour if not more away. Are you interested in a LOCAL beginner friendly tournament? If so, what time and day would you prefer?

Higher Level Strategy Alert 🚨

Keep Your Pairs… But Not Every Pair

One of the first things we teach is to keep your pairs because they give you options. And that’s still excellent advice!

But after playing lots of Mah Jongg, I’ve noticed something.

Sometimes you’ll have two pairs that rarely appear together in the same completed hand on the 2026 NMJL card. During the Charleston, this can be one more clue that helps you decide which tiles to keep and which ones you may be ready to pass.

⚠️ This isn’t a rule.

It’s simply another piece of information to consider as your rack begins to take shape.

The more clues you gather, the more confident your decisions become.
