“The doctors basically told us: ‘This is just aging.’ 9 months later, we’re over 112 pounds down between us — and I still feel sick thinking how close we were to giving up.”
It’s June 2026, and I’ve just done something that would’ve sounded impossible back in September — I went for a walk without planning where I could sit down. I’m 65 and my husband, Neil, is 68. Last year we didn’t feel like a couple anymore — we felt like two people quietly deteriorating in the same house.
Neil’s knees were agony. He’d push himself off the sofa with both hands like a much older man, face clenched. He stopped going upstairs unless he absolutely had to. Even carrying groceries from the car left him breathless. And me? Menopause didn’t just “make me gain weight” — it made me feel like my body was swelling from the inside out. Puffy face. Bloated stomach that felt hard. Aching hips. And that constant exhaustion that sleep simply doesn’t touch.
The part that still makes me angry is how easily we were brushed aside. At the clinic, I told the doctor I was frightened, that I felt like I was going downhill. He smiled politely and said, “It’s just your age. This is normal. Try eating a bit less.” Eating less? I was already counting every calorie like it was a test — and the scale barely moved. Weight loss groups. Low-fat everything. Walking when Neil could tolerate it. We did what we were told, and it felt like we were being blamed — like we were failing — when in reality we were simply stuck.
Then in October, my sister came over — she’s worked in medical research for years — and she said something that made me cry with relief: “You’re not lazy. You’re inflamed and stuck. After 55, the metabolic drain can clog, and the signals just don't get through.” She sent me an article about a protocol for clearing that build-up. I didn’t want to believe in another miracle. But I also didn’t want our story to end with Neil barely being able to get out of his chair.
So we started. Together.
We didn't rush it. Over the next 9 months, the changes were steady. By month three, Neil’s morning inflammation eased and he stopped reaching for the Tylenol every day. My rings started fitting again.
Today, I’m down 48 pounds and Neil is down 64 pounds — that’s 112 pounds between us. At his last check-up, the nurse actually asked, “What have you done?” And for the first time in years, I didn’t feel embarrassed. I felt proud.
I’ve put the link in the comments. If you’re over 60 and feel like you’ve been written off, please read it while it’s still available.
