❤️📚 LIKE. SHARE. COMMENT. FOLLOW.

Sometimes supporting an independent bookstore doesn't cost anything. Sometimes it begins with simply helping other people discover that we're here.

If The Tattered Book means something to you—if you believe books matter, that curiosity should be encouraged, and that communities need places where people can encounter ideas and one another—help us carry that message farther.

The world around books and education is changing. Libraries and schools face difficult choices about resources and access. Books continue to be challenged and removed from collections. And independent bookstores compete for attention in a digital landscape dominated by enormous companies and algorithms.

That makes communities of readers more important, not less.

When you like or comment, you help our posts reach more people. When you share, you introduce The Tattered Book to someone who may never have found us otherwise. When you follow, you become part of a growing community built around something we all value: books, learning, curiosity, and the freedom to explore ideas.

So we're asking for four small things today:

❤️ LIKE if you believe books matter.
💬 COMMENT and tell us what reading has given you.
📣 SHARE and help another reader discover us.
📚 FOLLOW and become part of our community.

A bookstore isn't sustained by transactions alone. It's sustained by people who believe its presence makes their community richer.

If that's something you believe, help us make some noise.

💜📚 World Su***de Prevention Day
Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer another person is our presence.
World Su***de Prevention Day reminds us that hope often begins with connection. Taking time to listen, checking in with a friend, or reminding someone they matter can help create a community where people feel seen, supported, and less alone. Small acts of compassion may seem ordinary, but they can have an extraordinary impact.

At The Tattered Book, community is built one conversation at a time. Stories help us understand experiences beyond our own, reduce feelings of isolation, and encourage empathy. While books are never a substitute for professional care, they can inspire conversations that remind people they are not alone. The Tattered Book is a safe space to ask for help.

What's one small act of kindness that has made a difference in your life? Share it in the comments, you never know who your story might encourage. 💜📚

📚 Book Recommendation: Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig (originally published 2015) is a memoir reflecting on the author's experience with depression and recovery. Through honesty and hope, it has encouraged many readers to seek connection and remember that difficult moments can pass.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is available by voice or text 24/7.

📚 Help Preserve a Local Landmark

A longstanding used bookstore is more than a place where books change hands. Over time, it can become part of a community's social infrastructure: a familiar place where people encounter neighbors, exchange ideas, discover local interests, and develop attachment to the place they call home.

Research gives us good reason to value institutions like these. Peer-reviewed research published in Environment and Behavior found that businesses functioning as community “third places” support sociability and place attachment. Another peer-reviewed study of third places found that these gathering spaces can contribute to social engagement, community cohesion, social capital, and local economic activity.

Research specifically examining bookstores has likewise treated them as potential third places—settings whose significance extends beyond their retail function to opportunities for leisure and social interaction.

That matters to the Next Chapter Campaign.

Preserving The Tattered Book means preserving an established local institution while investing in what it can continue to provide: books, education, events, gathering space, conversation, and connections between people.

If you believe communities are stronger when they retain distinctive local institutions, we're asking you to help preserve this one.

You can contribute directly in either of two ways:

📱 Venmo:

4-digit verification: 8025

🏪 In person:
Make a contribution directly at The Tattered Book, 110 W. 3rd St., Grand Island.

These direct methods also minimize fundraising-platform costs, allowing contributions to have a more immediate impact on the work ahead.

Preservation isn't simply about keeping something from disappearing. It's about deciding which institutions are worth carrying forward.

Help us carry The Tattered Book into its Next Chapter.

Note from Bookmonger Fred:

First of all I want to thank you for taking the time to read this. I'm responsible for generating and posting the majority of content on our social media including Patreon and to successfully get our name out in fron of new eyeballs and build community means we need a steady stream of content. I try to keep things interesting while also trying to create regular features. I'm a systems oriented person so I've been asked if our content is actually being posted by AI. On one hand I'm offended considering the amount of work I have devoted to keeping a regular schedules and assuring content is loaded ahead of time so when other professional responsibilities pop up I can still address them. On the other hand I get at; it's not the first time my particular brand of neurodivergence has resulted in me being compared to a robot.

In an attempt to help address that "automation" feel I'm adding these personal messages into my rotation of content to help humanize our content. I'm goimng to actively avoid using the templates and and formatting tools I'ver developed to help with content creation for these posts (despite my brain's protests and subsequent anxiety). This is also a great opportunity to let me know if there are types of social media content you would like to see more of.

I love The Tattered Book and what it stands for but at the end of the day it is a passion project I try to keep self sustaining with help of an amazing group of volunteers and and community supporters.

So this is a simple thank you for taking the time to get know me and reading something outside the analytical reccomendations.

I hope you have a great day and get a chance to read something enriching today.

📚 Talk About What Matters—and Build Connection While You Do It

Today’s request for supporting The Tattered Book doesn’t require spending a dollar:

Talk to one person about us.

Tell a friend, relative, coworker, or neighbor why you value independent bookstores, accessible community spaces, literacy, local history, or simply having places where people can gather around books and ideas.

There is good science behind the broader principle.

Peer-reviewed research on values affirmation has found that reflecting on personally important values can reinforce people’s sense of self and belonging. Importantly, research published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that social belonging was a particularly meaningful component of values-focused reflection.

A more recent randomized controlled trial published in the APA journal Emotion found that values-affirmation interventions focused on social connection could improve aspects of belonging, meaning, and psychological well-being under stressful circumstances.

That doesn't mean talking about a bookstore is a clinical intervention. It does suggest something more fundamental: our values and our relationships are important components of well-being—and communicating about what matters to us can help make those values social rather than merely private.

So consider this a small experiment in community building:

Talk to one person today about The Tattered Book.

Tell them what you value about it. Ask what they value in a community bookstore. Invite them to visit, follow our work, or learn about the Next Chapter Campaign.

A strong community isn't simply a collection of people living near one another. It's a network of people who discover what they care about together.

📖 One person. One conversation. One more connection.
