What to Plant in August — Week by Week

August is still a productive month in the garden. As summer begins to wind down, you can finish sowing a few warm-season crops and start shifting toward vegetables that prefer cooler autumn conditions.

🌞 Week 1: August 1–7
🥒 Cucumbers – Sow directly for a late-season crop where the growing season is still long enough.
🌱 Dwarf Beans – Another direct sowing can provide a final harvest before cooler weather.
🌿 Basil – Start in modules or pots and keep it in a warm, sheltered position.
🌻 Sunflowers – Direct sowing can still work in warmer regions for late color.

🌽 Week 2: August 8–15
🎃 Pumpkin / Squash – Best suited to areas with a long, warm season if you’re planting this late.
🌽 Sweet Corn – A last-chance crop in warm climates; cooler regions may need extra protection.
🌺 Nasturtiums – Sow directly for colorful flowers and edible leaves.

🌱 What Can You Plant in August? Here's Your Complete Fall Garden Guide!

August is one of the best months to start a fall vegetable garden. As temperatures gradually cool, many crops germinate quickly and produce healthier, sweeter harvests before winter arrives.

🥬 Leafy Greens • Spinach • Lettuce • Kale • Arugula • Bok Choy • Collard Greens

These fast-growing greens thrive in cooler weather and are perfect for continuous harvesting.

🥕 Root Vegetables • Carrots • Beets • Radishes • Turnips

Loose, well-drained soil helps roots grow straight and healthy. Keep the soil consistently moist until seeds germinate.

🥦 Brassicas (Cole Crops) • Broccoli • Cabbage • Cauliflower

Start these early enough in August so they have plenty of time to mature before hard frost. Rich soil and regular watering will produce larger, healthier heads.
