Probably my favorite Stephen Sondheim quote, among many favorite Stephen Sondheim quotes. It honestly changed my life. I was 21 and had just graduated from college. Sally Masakowski and Julie Winn, two friends who I'd graduated with were trying to convince me to move to New York City with them for one year (before we started "the rest of our lives"). I was struggling with the idea of leaving my family for a year or just remaining in New Orleans and getting some random job. I was in my apartment, listening to SUNDAY IN THE PARK, and this song came on. It's profound message was such that it made me call Sally and Julie the next day and say, "Okay, I'm in." In this case, the choice wasn't a mistake, nor was the choosing. I moved on and it changed my life in unexpectedly profound ways.

One of life's hardest lessons, especially for "people pleasers". I don't know if we ever LEARN it exactly; I just think it's a switch that gets thrown when you reach a certain age. Sometimes the circuit breaker still gets thrown and I forget this important sentence. But I'm getting better.

Learn one or two pages from a script each day, and I’ll have the play memorized in two months. Write a little each day, and in two weeks. I’ll have a new product to add to my store. Exercise a little each day, and I’ll live a longer, healthier life. Sometimes we’re intimidated by the mountain and have to remind ourselves that will never accomplish the goal if we refuse to take a single step.
