Whats the most random/ funniest thing ive ever sold on Ebay?

If you guessed a toilet top lid from the 1970's you would be correct!

I believe more and more everyday that niche reselling is where to go.

For example, there's a 100000 pairs of used modern sketchers listed on Ebay for around $30-$40, all exactly the same. In this economy, not many folks are spending over $10 on a pair of used, common shoes.

How many of these exact toilet lids can be found online?? Only three!!!

If you have a surplus of something, it isnt as simple as "throw it up and make some $." If you want to make a real income off this you must treat it like anything else- put in time researching, learning, understanding trends, etc.

The reseller market is becoming extremely saturated, especially with used clothing. Can you get rich off reselling clothes? Of course, but you will need to understand vintage vs modern, brands, and trends. If clothes arent your main thing (like me) try to niche down!

I am a bit confused but also flattered that I am suddenly gaining a following on this page after 5 years!

Maybe a sign of the times? Either way, I am flattered.

I also figured it would be a great time to formally introduce myself.

My name is Alex and my full-time job is working in my community as a nurse. I recently was able to open my very own homecare business. So I often get asked, why even re sell? Why "waste your time" if you already have one business???

Well, frankly because I enjoy it. I love saving things from the landfill, re purposing items, and having that one random, obscure part someone has spent countless hours trying to find. I am able to offer quality parts, items, and a little bit of everything to customers all over the world.

I have learned so much about electronics, automobiles, machinery, and so much more.

Each day- I learn something new.

Life is about doing what you love, ignoring the haters, and helping your neighbors. ❤️

Chat GPT has made listing Ebay posts so much easier! I just pop my photos into Chat GPT and it gives me everything I need. It only takes about 30 seconds per listing now. Oh how times have changed..

The online reseller landscape is ever changing..

This is actually kind of funny when I think about it, and I’m honestly considering making a video about it.

I’ve been reselling for about ten years, mostly on eBay. During COVID it was actually my full-time job. After that I stepped back and it became more of a side hustle.

Back then my strategy was simple: if I thought I could make a few bucks on something, I bought it.
And yeah… that works.

But it also led to a basement full of random stuff that either takes forever to sell or I’m not motivated enough to even list. No real system, no clear inventory structure, just piles of “things that might sell someday.” Eventually that kills your momentum.

At the same time, the resale landscape has definitely shifted. People aren’t just browsing for random stuff anymore, they’re buying things they need.

Parts. Specific replacements. Problem-solving items.

That realization completely changed my approach.
After thinking it through (and honestly bouncing ideas around with ChatGPT), I realized the real key was focusing on what I actually enjoy sourcing and selling.

For me, that’s parts.

Now when I go to garage sales, auctions, or cleanouts, I’m not trying to buy everything anymore. I’m looking for very specific categories I know well. And the biggest shift? I’m comfortable walking away from everything else.
It’s a mindset change.

Living in rural Iowa actually makes this easier. The stuff that’s easy to source around here is things like:

vintage well built tools
car parts
lawn mower parts
small engine equipment
high end vacuum parts

These are items you can source for very cheap and often, for free!

And eBay is literally where people go when they need a very specific part. When someone needs it, they’ll pay for it.

Meanwhile platforms like Whatnot are great for moving lots of miscellaneous items quickly.
Both can make money — it just depends on your strategy.

But personally, if one part can net me $50 profit, I’d much rather sell that than list ten different $5 items.

It’s cleaner, faster, and honestly way more enjoyable.
