A Petoskey stone is a 350-million-year-old fossil and rock composed of extinct prehistoric coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) found mainly in the northwestern lower peninsula of Michigan. During the Devonian period, Michigan sat near the equator and was covered by a warm, shallow sea where these colonial corals thrived. Glaciers later broke these fossils from the bedrock, smoothed their edges, and deposited them along Great Lakes beaches. ❤️
