Do you think composting toilets need an agitator to work properly? Think again 🫪

“Wait, it’s not actually composting in there?”
Most people assume the mixing crank on a lot of composting toilets is what makes the magic happen. But real composting takes way longer than the time it takes to fill a bin with normal use. So no matter how much you stir it, nothing’s actually breaking down in there yet.

“So what’s the toilet actually doing?”
A composting toilet’s real job is keeping things dry and separated, that’s what kills the smell and stops bacteria from taking over. The actual composting happens after, once you move the solids to a humanure pile or toss them in a compostable bag.

If the toilet isn’t composting anything yet, there’s no reason to add a mixing mechanism, it’s just one more thing to clean, bend over for, and eventually break. Ditching it also opens up how you build: front load, side load, slide-out, whatever fits your space. And to empty it you just need to take out the bucket or trash can, without the need to disassemble anything or work around the mixing mechanism.

We got The Big Adventures of Tiny House for the team’s kids and it ended up being a household staple for most of us.
It follows an old farmhouse that gets torn apart and rebuilt into Tiny, a little house on wheels, who hits the road with Big Truck trying to figure out if he still counts as a real home. He meets Shiny the Airstream along the way, Waverly the houseboat, Buster the Skoolie. A whole cast of weird little dwellings all doing their own version of home.
The book also doesn’t treat any one way of living off-grid as the „real“ one. A Skoolie, a houseboat, a tiny house on a trailer, they’re all just different answers to the same question.
And by the end Tiny stops worrying about whether he’s a real house at all. Turns out that was never the point.
Good gift for a tiny living family with kids, or just a nice one to read if you need reminding why you started doing this in the first place.

Cover material is one of the unsung heroes of a successful composting toilet setup. The right cover helps manage moisture, control odors, and keep your solids bin clean. In this article, we’ll walk through what makes a good cover, creative ways to source it, and a few tips from our own team’s off-grid experience.

A good cover material:
* Is carbon-based
* Has relatively fine particles to block odors and flies
* Does not inhibit the microbial action needed for composting (though this is less important if you won’t be composting the contents of your toilet)

Slide through some of our favorite options, and what not to use. We bet you didn’t know peat moss isn’t one of the preferred ones!

You may be able to acquire sawdust or small wood chips or shavings for free at a local saw mill or wood shop if there is one in your area. If you live in a wooded area and are breaking down your own firewood, the sawdust and small wood chips you produce is an ideal material for using as a cover material. Just make sure the sawdust has been milled into small pieces. As with other cover materials, you want the sawdust to have a bit of moisture for the best odor-blocking but not be sopping wet.
* Often free from local sawmills or woodshops
* Can also come from splitting your own firewood
* Works best when milled into fine pieces
* Slight moisture helps with odor control — not too wet
* Natural, effective, and easy to source in wooded areas

Made from the shredded hulls of coconuts, which is a waste material from processing coconuts for food, coconut coir is sustainable, relatively inexpensive, and readily available. It’s an excellent option for small-scale and nomadic applications since it’s compact, easy to store, and can be purchased in convenient bricks. Look for bricks (approximately the size of masonry bricks) at hardware stores or nurseries sold as seed starters. Add some water to hydrate them a bit for best performance.

If your composting toilet has started smelling off, it’s almost always one of these three things. None of them mean the system is broken, but a few small adjustments. Swipe through and save this for later ➡️

This one’s not actually a problem. Fresh deposits smell for a minute, then it fades once cover material hits it. If you’re extra sensitive to it (or you’ve got guests over) a little vent fan pulls it out before you even notice.

This is the mistake almost everyone makes in the beginning. A light sprinkle doesn’t do anything. You want a solid layer of coir or sawdust actually smothering what’s under there, not just decorating the top of it. Make sure you cover the actual source of smell, and not just the toilet paper!

If liquid is landing in your solids bin, that’s where most bad smells come from. It adds moisture, and moisture is what makes things funky. You can just dump in more cover material to compensate, but then you’re emptying the bin way more often. Easier fix: a diverter with a deep bowl so liquids go where they’re supposed to from the start.

We developed the Throne Composting Toilet because we were fed up with all the other composting toilets on the market. We carried humongous toilets filled with p**p outside to try and dump them upside down without a hazmat suit, we used q-tips to clean nooks and crannies, cleaned urine spills every other day and knew damn well we overpaid for that experience.
Here’s what we learned so you don’t make the same mistake!

A diverter that doesn’t divert the p*e in the liquids jug and the p**p in the bucket is an experience we can’t recommend. We’ve cleaned out a slush of sewage no amount of sawdust could fix, and don’t get us started on trying to aim into a bucket because that opening is too damn small (especially when there are kids involved!).
We developed the Throne urine diverter to fix all those issues, so you have dry solids and a clean liquids jug!
