Janna's Flowers

Janna's Flowers We grow fresh cut peonies in Hermiston Oregon. The season typically is from early May through June We have 13 acres of peonies which are sold as cut flowers.

Our farm is located in Eastern Oregon, just outside of Hermiston. A typical season lasts from Memorial Day until the end of June. For the most part, the flowers are sold wholesale, but you can definitely find us at local farmers markets all over. We pick the flowers when they are still tight and closed, and then keep them in coolers until they are shipped off or are sold. This keeps the peonies fresh for longer periods of time.

Heatwave resources for gardeners here:
This is not our first rodeo, Oregon gardening friends. We learned a lot from the heatwaves last summer, and with another one bearing down on many of us this week, remember what we’ve learned:
• Water deeply and then apply mulch. Then water again. Check out this example from our friends in Wasco County demonstrating the power of mulch:
https://www.facebook.com/OSUMG/photos/10158437266773204
• Make sure your nectar and pollen providing plants aren’t stressed and are ready to start working when bees show up to feed. Read more about how bees cope during heatwaves:
https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/pollinators/how-help-bees-survive-heat-wave
• Provide shade: move containers where they get shade, or use shade cloth or sun umbrellas for tender plants.
• Know the signs of heat stress in plants, and read more ways to prevent it here:
https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/flowers-shrubs-trees/heat-wave-garden-how-identify-prevent-heat-stress-plants
• Avoid planting, transplanting, pruning or fertilizing during intense heat.
• Avoid chemicals: Many treatments for plant disease and insect issues can damage plants when temperatures are consistently above 80F: check the label of a product for specifics before applying. Some plant types such as conifers and succulents can be further damaged by any treatment—even soap or neem oil—applied during extreme heat.
• Hydrangeas can really take a hit from the heat. Here is some specific help and information for helping hydrangeas through and after a heatwave:

• And remember, take care of yourself when in the garden as well:
