Manolo Betancur, the owner of Manolo’s Bakery in Charlotte, North Carolina, has spent more than a decade delivering free birthday cakes to people experiencing homelessness in his community. Calling them his “neighbors,” Betancur partners with a local nonprofit and regularly donates freshly baked sheet cakes so that unhoused people can celebrate their birthdays with dignity and joy. This effort helps individuals feel recognized and valued, especially on a day that might otherwise go unnoticed.

In addition to cake, the community events where the desserts are shared often include other forms of support like hot meals, haircuts, and small gifts, all offered with no questions asked. Betancur’s hope is that these simple celebrations bring connection, love, and a sense of worth to people who are often overlooked, reminding them, and the broader community, that everyone deserves to be seen and appreciated.
