By the 1990s, Black Double Dutch teams had taken the game from neighborhood sidewalks to the world stage.

The brought competitive Double Dutch to an iconic venue- the Apollo Theater, while new powerhouse teams like the emerged.

As Double Dutch expanded beyond the inner city, new opportunities emerged — but so did disparities.
Many Black teams who built the sport still face challenges securing practice space, travel funding, and resources to compete.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: WE HONOR OUR DOUBLE DUTCH LEGENDS

The powerful Black Magic team from Hartford, CT — Phyllis Goggins, Lisa Butler, Shantell Smith, and Connie Williams — helped show the world what Double Dutch could be.

🔥 Speed. Skill. Discipline. Legacy.

Team member Phyllis Goggins earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s fastest jumper, with 369 touches in 120 seconds.

🏆 Black Magic went on to win the World Double Dutch Championship in New York, and perform in London for the Queen of England.

They weren’t just winning competitions —
they were helping carry Double Dutch from neighborhood game to global stage.

At Black Girls Jump, we honor the teams who paved the way for today’s jumpers, coaches, and leaders.

If you have photos, memories, or connections to Black Magic, help us preserve their story.
Thank you to GinoBeats for documenting their story through song. Full song link in comments.

Double Dutch Forces – Columbia, SC
Founded in 1985, Double Dutch Forces uses the sport of Double Dutch to empower youth with life skills, confidence, and community. What started as a jump rope team has become a supportive space where children — especially girls — build sisterhood, discipline, leadership, and resilience both on and off the jump-ropes.

This Black History Month, we celebrate their decades-long legacy of mentorship, championship spirit, and community uplift! 🖤✨
