It was 20 years ago today I was woken up by a call saying that we were under attack and to turn on the news. I turned on the news to see one of the towers burning. It was just a few moments later we witnessed the second tower hit. We sat there shocked fearful and wondering what we next. Knowing what was coming I started gathering my gear as I knew the call was coming. Not even two hours later I was on my way into work as the emergency call system was activated. Emotions were mixed as we hit the streets looking for unusual threats and checking “high profile target areas.” Over the next two days I watched as friends/co-workers who were previously assigned to “Units” were not longer at work, gone to unknow locations and to not be heard from for what ended up being years.
However, the think that stood out the most to me was the people. Hundreds of Americans took to the street corners with flags and signs. The patriotic spirit was alive. Many of these people had loved ones and knew they would be deployed to war very soon, but they come out despite that fear to show support for a country that had just been cut to the bone.
Fast forward 20 years, we are a country divided by so many things (I will not get into that), instead I chose to remember that day that we were united as a country, a people and a nation.
