Here’s a great look at just how much time, effort, and heart goes into being a vendor. We’ll have an amazing group of vendors at the Pick-a-dilly Market on October 17, and we hope you’ll come out, see their hard work firsthand, and shop all the wonderful items they’ve created!

A craft vendor’s work starts long before the doors open at a market and continues long after the last shopper leaves. What customers see beautifully displayed on a table may represent weeks or even months of work.

First comes the creative process: developing ideas, choosing colors and styles, making prototypes, ordering supplies, comparing costs, waiting on materials, and sometimes starting over when something doesn’t turn out as planned.

Then comes the actual making, cutting, sewing, painting, sanding, baking, crocheting, engraving, printing, assembling, packaging, and more. Many handmade items take hours to create, something shoppers may not realize when they see the price tag.

Once the products are finished, each one may still need to be priced, tagged, packaged, photographed, inventoried, and organized. Vendors also have to guess how much inventory to make without knowing what shoppers will buy.

And there are plenty of expenses beyond the product itself: booth fees, supplies, packaging, credit-card fees, business cards, signs, tablecloths, displays, shelves, racks, tents, tent weights, tables, carts, storage tubs, and sometimes insurance or permits.

Then comes market day.

Many vendors are up before daylight loading vehicles with merchandise, displays, tables, tents, and heavy tubs. Once they arrive, everything has to be unloaded and carried or carted to the booth. Then comes setting up the tent or tables, arranging merchandise, hanging signs, hiding boxes, preparing the payment system, and turning an empty space into an inviting little shop, all before the first shopper arrives.

During the event, vendors may stand for six, seven, eight hours or more. They greet shoppers, answer questions, explain their products, wrap purchases, process payments, restock displays, and keep everything looking nice. Sometimes there is barely time for lunch or even a bathroom break.

There’s an emotional side, too. Vendors may hear wonderful compliments, but they also hear people question their prices or compare handmade products to mass-produced items. They can spend months preparing for an event without knowing whether they’ll have a wonderful sales day or barely cover their expenses.

And when shoppers leave, the vendor’s day still isn’t over.

Everything has to be taken down, repacked, loaded onto carts, hauled back to the vehicle, and carefully fit inside. Then they drive home, and unload it all again.

Afterward comes bookkeeping, sales tax, inventory, ordering more supplies, repairing displays, washing tablecloths, answering messages, posting on social media, applying for future markets, creating new products, and getting ready to do it all over again.

So, when someone purchases something from a craft vendor, they aren’t paying only for the item sitting on the table.

They’re supporting the idea, the materials, the hours of creating, the mistakes along the way, the booth fee, the equipment, the early morning, the loading and unloading, the long hours on their feet, and the courage it takes to put something they created in front of strangers and hope someone loves it enough to take it home.

That’s why shopping from a craft vendor means so much more than simply buying something. When a shopper says, “I love this. I’m going to take it,” they’re appreciating not only the finished product, but all the work behind it.
