Why do we use Elderberry in our house?
Elderberries are nutrient-dense, dark purple berries packed with antioxidants (particularly anthocyanins) and Vitamin C. They are most commonly used to support immune function, reduce inflammation, and help shorten the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms.
Key health benefits include: Cold and Flu Relief: Taking elderberry extracts or syrups may reduce the duration of common cold and flu-like symptoms by up to two days if taken at the first sign of illness.Immune System Support: High levels of vitamins A and C, along with immunostimulatory polyphenols, help strengthen the body's natural defenses.
Antioxidant Protection: Elderberries contain up to 10 times the flavonoid content of other berries, fighting oxidative stress and cellular damage.Heart and Skin Health: The fruit's anti-inflammatory properties may promote healthy blood vessels, reduce cholesterol, and help manage skin issues like acne.
Important Safety Note: Always consume cooked or commercially prepared elderberry supplements (like syrups, lozenges, or gummies). Raw elderberries, as well as the bark, leaves, and seeds, contain a toxic substance that can cause nausea and vomiting.
