People ask me this question a lot.
The answer is that I didn’t plan to make orchid arrangements, and I certainly never thought I would work with permanent botanicals. I just sort of fell into it and like all things that aren’t planned, it was an evolution of sorts that helped me get through a difficult time and brought me joy when I needed it most.
I lost both of my parents between 2014 and 2016. And as my siblings and I began the painful process of cleaning out their lovely home I looked forward to bringing back an orchid arrangements that my mother had on the coffee table in their library. I planned a spot for it and thought I would look at it each day and think of her. My mother was my center. She was my everything and losing her left me in a very sad place. I was seeking every connection I could find for comfort and strength.
When the day came to load up the moving truck the orchid was gone. I was devastated. There had been many people in and out of the house for weeks so perhaps it was stolen, or someone dropped it and broke the lovely container and threw away the evidence. To this day I have no idea what happened.
Weeks later, I couldn’t stop thinking about the orchid. It became a symbol of so much loss for me. I decided I needed to make something similar to remind me of my mother, and so I did. And then a friend saw it and asked if I could make one for her too. And another friend saw that one…
Soon I left my interior design days behind and focused on the thing that brings me the most joy - being a maker. I make orchid arrangements and I make clay pots and I paint paintings and I sew handbags and on it goes. My studio is a place of great happiness for me and I think of my wonderful strong beautiful mother every day that I spend there creating.
Thank you for allowing me to share the journey with you.
Stay creative.
