Happy Birthday Goofy!
Happy 94th Birthday Goofy! 🤪🎉
Good hearted, hilarious, and endlessly optimistic, Goofy has been making Disney audiences laugh for generations.
Goofy officially made his very first appearance on May 25, 1932, in the animated short Mickey’s R***e. But longtime Disney fans may be surprised to learn he did not originally go by the name “Goofy.” In his debut, he was introduced as “Dippy Dawg,” a much older looking character with a beard who loudly crunched peanuts while laughing in the audience during Mickey’s stage performance.
Over the next few years, Disney gradually redesigned the character into the tall, lovable, accident prone Goofy we know today. By 1934’s Orphan’s Benefit, the name “Goofy” officially stuck, helping launch one of Disney’s most iconic characters.
A huge part of Goofy’s charm came from legendary voice actor Pinto Colvig, whose unforgettable laugh and vocal style gave the character his unique personality. Disney fans may also recognize Colvig as the voice of Grumpy and Sleepy in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
What started as a small supporting cartoon role eventually turned Goofy into one of Disney’s biggest stars, leading his own shorts, television series, movies, and theme park appearances for nearly a century.
94 years later, Goofy still reminds fans that sometimes it is okay to laugh at yourself, stay positive, and embrace the chaos. Gawrsh! 💙
