I know that, for some reason, y'all hate when we post lap steel guitars. I know this because, when we post a lap steel, it gets like three reacts and no one cares enough to comment. This 1937 National New Yorker is decked out in all the art-deco drip that anyone could possibly ask for and there y'all are, not giving a damn. It's gonna be 90 years old next year, it's been cool every single day of its long, long life, and y'all can't seem to appreciate it. Oughta be ashamed of yourselves, respect your elders...

A Silvertone 1448 comes in the door, nothing all that exciting, right? We see a lot of these, Danelectro and Sears had a huge hit with this particular model and they were sold in large numbers. What makes this particular guitar exciting is the fact that it came from the local Sears right here in Huntsville, Alabama way back in 1964!

Complete with the original receipt, owner's manual, and amplifier case, this one saw a LOT of use over the years but somehow remained in town for the past sixty-two years before finding its way to us here at Izzy's Vintage Guitars.

But, since this one is a local piece, let's have a little more fun with the original advertisement from the 1963 Fall/Winter Sears catalog and a photo of the Sears location at the Heart of Huntsville Mall from circa 1974, the closest that we could find (it operated in this location from 1961 to 1984). I think it's only right that we keep this one local so I'm putting it back in my personal stash, it's a piece of our history. It just doesn't seem right shipping it off somewhere foreign and exotic (and by "foreign and exotic," I mean anywhere outside of north Alabama).

Oh yeah, that $74.18? Adjusted for inflation, that comes out to $801.72 today and that kind of money goes a lot further in the guitar world than it did back in the day. While Danelectro certainly had it down with the well-built, "inexpensive" instruments back in the day, we're living in a golden era of much higher-quality, inexpensive instruments that will run circles around what you could get back in the day...

Not often seen in the wild, the Epiphone Coronet was available in the Silver Fox finish during the 1960's production run. Using a silver grain filler on the mahogany body and neck, it was then sprayed with translucent dark green lacquer to produce the grey, shimmering effect.
This particular instrument, from 1964, is a fantastic example of just how great this rare finish looks especially when paired with the original nickel hardware.

The Harmony H-15 Silhouette is not necessarily a rare guitar (despite what every single Facebook Marketplace seller will tell you πŸ˜†πŸ˜‰), but what is rare is to find one that has held up well, in both the cosmetic and playable sense, over the last sixty years.

When I picked this example up for the first time, I expected the typical old Harmony: too much neck relief, poor fret work, some lackluster work to try in an attempt to make it more playable. This one, from 1966, breaks all of those rules: it's a great playing instrument that is issue free. The neck is straight, the fretwork is good, it's a totally playable guitar with no surprises.

Now that, my friends, is indeed rare...

It's always fun visiting the local music stores as we pass through small towns and Murray, Kentucky did not disappoint yesterday with Greymare Music Works. Austin sent us down the road with a few very cool pieces and I'm still drooling over a certain Slingerland kit the he had on the floor but, these days, I try to practice more self-control. πŸ˜†
