June's Fun Fused Glass

I cut and make them myself in my home studio which had been my now-grown son’s bedroom! He’s out and the kiln is in. Good riddance (Only kidding)! Fused glass is made up of multiple layers of clear or colored glass fired in a kiln whose temperature can reach 1465 degrees. Most items are at least two sheets of glass fused together. Through the heating process two or three layers of glass meld into

a single piece. A slow cooling period ensures the piece is robust. For my designs, the base is usually a clear or a white layer with a second colored piece added on top. If a creative design has been added, it requires an additional third layer. The whole firing/cooling cycle takes over 20 hours to complete. Items that are shaped with a mold (such as plates, bowls, soap dishes, candle holders) will then take an additional 19 hours in the kiln to slump or drape to the shape of the mold. This is how I create a unique whimsical piece. I am relatively new to this hobby but I have been enjoying being creative. It is so much fun to select the glass and decide on what to create. It has become addictive! I like using lots of different colors of glass. I like making pieces that make people smile. I hope that the pieces that I create make you smile.
