Join Ragged Mountain Equipment's own Cort Hansen as he brings you through the history of this fascinating town. A great walk for all fitness levels, it does involve a 1.5 mile walk to and from the town. Bring a lunch, plenty of water, (maybe bug spray) and plenty of storage for all the pictures you'll be taking.

Nestled deep in the White Mountains, Livermore, New Hampshire, is a fascinating, historic "ghost town" that once thrived as a bustling, company-owned logging hub. Incorporated in 1876 by the wealthy Saunders family, the town grew to house roughly 150 to 200 residents, boasting its own sawmill, school, post office, and even the Saunders' grand mansion along Main Street, all supported by the industrious Sawyer River Railroad.

However, Livermore's prosperity was plagued by a series of devastating misfortunes, including a smallpox outbreak in 1880 and multiple fires that repeatedly leveled its mills. The final, fatal blow came in November 1927, when a catastrophic New England flood destroyed the railway beds and bridges, permanently closing the mills the following year and prompting residents to abandon the town.

Officially dissolved by the state in 1951, Livermore was swallowed by the White Mountain National Forest, leaving behind only an occasional resident, a few cellars, and the moss-covered brick ruins of its powerhouse for hikers to discover today.
